Caught the rerun of Barbara and the DoRites last night on TNN (The New Age Network). Afterward, and still fighting nausea, I put her '73 hit "Midnight Oil" on the turntable. What a difference. I felt alot better.

My favorite Mandell song is Standing Room Only, which of course she didn't do. It really seems to me that all these "mega" stars forget about the songs that got them there.

For someone who STARTED on steel guitar, she sure doesn't have much of it in her records. Did anyone but me notice? But she was easy on the eyes! Maybe "Cookie" is the only one who knows how good a steelplayer she really was! (I'd like to watch her "jam" for a couple hours.) Was she ever at any of the steel conventions?

Hey, this is all just light-hearted curiosity...no flames please!

As you all know, Barbara was "country when country wasn't cool." Now I think she's still cool, but I'm not sure she's still country

I was on a show years ago opening for Barbara when I played for Gary P. Nunn, (Cookie was great, btw; though I didn't have a chance to talk to him), and I thought she played pretty good steel. I think it was Steel Guitar Rag or some such. Mr. Jones could correct me I'm sure.

It was on one of those Hank Jr.-type songs where she played b*njo, sax, steel, bass horn, Uilean pipes, hammered Albanian dulcimer, some Tibetan instrument I didn't recognize, etc. You get the picture... as I recall, she might have even had wind chimes hanging from the back of her belt.

The wind chimes were a nice touch...

Hey, she's really talented, she's commercial, she's 52, she's "been there, done that," and she's making bucks. That's copasetic with me.

The super steel on S.R.O. is PF, from what I was told.

I have one of the old Sho-Bud instructional books with her picture on the inside back cover - standing in a mini-skirt next to a Sho-Bud steel.

But, I thought she abandoned music to become a Hollywood star??? (excluding old re-runs of her shows).

Well Herb, if Diamond Rio can say "metamorphosize" in a country song then I guess you can say "copasetic" on the steel guitar forum… (Neither of them seem to wash with my spell-checker but I’m too lazy to get the dictionary.)

Speaking of Barbara and steel, one of her steel mentors—a friend of her father—is a fellow forumite. He’s also Merle Haggard’s bandleader. Perhaps he can fill us in on her chops, etc.

I think what few times I've seen her play steel guitar on various television shows, couldn't have hurt the "exposure", of the instrument.

I pulled a couple of Barbara's albums out(actually that's all I have, and there was at least as much steel as there is on today's HNC, mavbe a precurser of things to come. What steel there was, was very nice.

Ron, if "copasetic" is not in your spell checker, you have a very "un-hip" spell checker!
