I did an even trade some years ago with a guy in Canada, he thought he was doing me a favor, posted the value of the guitar that he sent as $1000, UPS hit me pretty hard for a customs fee.
I try to NEVER use UPS since them, it really made me mad.
Last guitar that I shipped to Canada, I used USPS, it arrived safely but took a LONG time to get there.
I really hate it but I try not to do any transactions buying, selling or trading with people in Canada, unless they have a way for me to ship it to a USA address and they can pick it up.
EVERY time I've done a deal the shipping takes way too long.
I've shipped items to UK, Europe, Japan, Austrailia, and they arrived faster with no problems than items that I've shipped to Canada.
It doesn't make sense but that's the way it is.

I think the problems arise from expectations of fast delievery. I recently bought an SD-10 from the southern states, and I will patiently wait for as long as it takes to get here. Same with a seat I just ordered. It will be here when it gets here. In the same fashion, I just shipped a box to Texas and informed the buyer it will be 10 or more business days getting there.
USPS air should provide faster shipping to Canada. If the buyer is willing to spend the extra dough, send it that way.
So far, I haven't had any glitches on either end with USA transactions. I enjoy dealing with our neighbours down south. The transactions are always smooth and polite, and in my experience both sides are always willing to do what it takes to make things as painless as possible. I do usually ask for USPS as the shipper. Sometimes things arrive UPS or Fedex and I get dinged on brokerage, but that's my problem and the price I pay for getting the gear that I want.
I do fear, however, that more American forum members are going to stop shipping to Canada because of these posts. This would be an unnecessary shame, because that decision would be based on a few bad experiences. I will continue to defend this issue on the forum.
All it takes to make Canadian/American transactions work is a little knowledge, understanding, information and communication. I've ended up making some American friends from such transactions. That's the real bonus of buying and selling on the forum.
