Just got the call.
Arhoolie CD502 "Live at the 2nd Sacred Steel Convention" has won the Indie award for "Best Gospel Album of 2002." The Indie is the rough equivalent of a grammy for independent/alternative labels, albeit on a much smaller scale. Here's the Web site: http://www.afim.org/
Congratulations to all the artists, Sacred Steel Convention producers Marcus Hardy and Lonnie Bennett, engineer Buddy Ray of Mirror Image Studios, all the folks at Arhoolie Records and everyone else involved in this project.

| Hey, Bob, congratulations! I've been keeping my fingers crossed. I don't know what your competition was, but it's hard to imagine any better gospel album coming out than this one in the past year. Of all the Sacred Steel albums, I think "Live at the 2nd Sacred Steel Convention" is my favorite of all. Congratulations to you, to Chris and to all the wonderful musicians on the album. |

Thanks guys. We are all thrilled. Imagine how Ray Ray Holloman, who was just 15 at the time of his performance, must feel about being on this album. A great start for a promising young steeler. Come to think of it, it was the recording debut for several--maybe most--of the artists.
You can see the nominees for all categories at www.afim.org. I don't know who any of the other winners were and they are not posted yet. Jerry Douglas was nominated in the Best Acoustic Instrumental category.
We are all looking forward to your lap steel book, Andy.

Hey Bob, Man I just finished listening to samples of the Sacred Steel players and I gotta tell ya, they are awesome! even the female is good, wow! Now is she the only one? When is the next convention?

Thanks guys. We are all very excited about the Indie.
As is so often the case in many ethnic and regional musical traditions, the instrumentalists are predominately male. There are a handful of female steelers in the House of God, Keith Dominion and the Church of the Living God, Jewell Dominion, the two sects that have the strong steel guitar tradition. It's possible--even likely-- that due to the increased interest in and awareness of the "Sacred Steel" tradition there are more females playing today than ever before, but I can't say that with certainty. In 11 years of documenting this music I have seen a few female drummers (and recorded one on CD450), bassists and guitarists. Probably the most common instrument for women to play in these churches is some sort of keyboard. There are many, many female vocal solists--perhaps even more than males--in the churches.
Although relatively new to the steel, Lisa Lang (who appears on CD502) is an experienced keyboardist. Aubrey Ghent helped her a lot with the steel. She says she has an "all-girl" (her words) band back in Miami--a group I'm anxious to hear and see.
Ms. Kim Love is a fine steeler and guitarist who plays at the Jewell Dominion church in Philly. She rarely plays steel there because Reggie "Footie" Covington is the regular steel guitarist for that church. Footie, by the way is on CD502 playing a medley that climaxes with that old gospel standard "Theme from the Pink Panther." That's right, the Pink Panther played through a giant vintage Morley Roto-wah. The crowd went wild; women were screaming!
Ms. Maurice Bradley plays steel at a House of God in Rochester and occassionally posts on this Forum.
The next Sacred Steel Convention is planned for early spring 2004 in Orlando. Stay tuned for updates.
