This has nothing to do with steel guitar, but I wanted to share it with all interested in Hawaiian culture.
Kaui'healani Mahikoa Brandt (aka Auntie Kaui) was awarded the Florida Folk Heritage Award by the Florida Secretary of State in Tallahassee yesterday for her lifetime contribution as a hula dancer, teacher and Hawaiian cultural advocate. She was born in Oahu and came to Orlando in 1971 to lead a dance troupe at Disney World, where she still works. In recent years she has led Na Opio Pio I Orlando, a hula halau and dance group for children of the Orlando Polynesian community.
About 25 Pacific Islanders came from as far as Pensacola to chant, dance and place leis (up to her eyeballs!) on Auntie Kaui. Kawei'i Punahele performed a chant that he composed in her honor. Later that evening most of the group danced at a party at the home of my colleaugue, Tina Bucuvalas.
A most memorable evening.
Congratulations Auntie Kaui! |

Another Fine Hawaiian will be honored here in Portland, Oregon, on Sunday, March 30th.
Friends and admirers, litterally from all over the world, will be in attendance for his CD RELEASE PARTY. Not sure if all the dancers will be on hand but his band will be there playing and singing.
Manny K (Fernandez)is the man......a great singer of traditional Hawaiian melodies, who has invested much of his life and musical career educating others on the many beauties of the islands. "In This Enchanted Place"..........a great CD! |

I'll confirm what Ray said about Manny's c.d. Excellent! The only thing Ray left out was the name of that great steel guitarist on that cd...he sure played some beautiful stuff. Now, if only I could recall his name....hmmmm, Jerry ? no. Maybe it was Jody ? I don't think so.
Hey, when all else fails, read the cd jewel box....it's a guy named Ray Montee!!!! How about that ? Ya gotta order this cd if only to hear some beautiful steel work. |
