I am trying out a MasterTone Special (made by Gibson). Squareneck, 6-string, small scale. It is a nice instrument and has a unique voice, but I was surprized at the lack of volume.

Does anyone have any experience with these instruments and know if this common? Also, how does it compare to an Oahu? Are they also quiet instruments?

The pickup in your Mastertone probably needs to be re-magnetized, Which can probably be done by Jason Lollar(he can do anything!) I have a Newyorker I bought new in 1950, which I seldom play, but I have noticed the volume is low lately. So, I'll have to remagnetize it. I have heard that it really makes an old steel come alive.

I used to have an early '30s Oahu Tonemaster, and it's oversized single coil pickup (I just called it "The Flintstone" pickup) probably needed re-magnetizing, its output was pretty equal to that of my Strat.
Which was fine by me, never been very fond of those mega-output pickups anyway.

Terry,

I have a Mastertone Special that I have had practically all my life. It has lots of volume. The volume control could be bad. Mine cuts out sometimes and the volume goes way down. Just a thought.
