I wonder if the Marrs CatCan is used in electric bands at all, when they want a dobro-type sound. Is the sound close enough to a resonator sound? Does it have a lot of feedback? Do you need a special steel for it? I have never heard a recording of it. So I presume it is used on stage, but for a recording they will use a real resonator. But I would think if it a "new" type of sound, they would want it on a recording.

You don't need a special steel for it, it is the steel!. I just bought one over the Forum.
I have an LDG Sho~Bud with the pad and I intend to take the pad off and lay the catcan in its place. I remember they used to make a special stand for it, higher than the regular pedal steel so it was handy for some dobro type licks anytime you wanted to lay em down.

Erv, I hope the CatCan guitar is not too wide to fit.
I saw pictures from a link on the forum of someone who did the same. He just built the guitar in permanently.
Is it 6 or 8 string? And would you put a dobro G-tuning on it or C6th?
I am very curious about the sound, so when it arrives, please let me know what it is like. (Maybe a small MP3?) Also, what pickup does it have and how far is it from the bridge? It has to be further away from the bridge because of the can. |

Peter,
I started on steel guitar using an A high bass tuning. Just like the G dobro tuning only two notches higher. That is the tuning I'll use. It is just a six string. The pickup is fairly close to the bridge becaus the bridge actrually sits on top of the "catcan". There is plate on the bottom of the guitar and you can see it. I have an old Sho~bud and it has a certificate on the bottom signed by Duane Marrs. He built it.

That sounds like a great rig - with the right amp, you'd be ready for anything. Are you going to wire them together or just rest the 6-stringer on the empty neck and use two cords?
I'd be really interested in hearing how it works out on stage. |

I've had one since 1987 and it's a good substitute for not having a Dobro. I set it on the back neck of my guitar when I use it and just unplug the steel and plug it in the cat can. I use a Pro-Fex II so I have a setting that's only EQ and reverb and kind of flat. The Pro-Fex has a Dobro kind of effect in the Newman settings and you can use it with those to give it a little more. Also you can use a plastic bar that's gives it some tonal qualities you might like. It's not a Dobro so don't expect it to sound like one but it's a good substitute and there's no feedback or anything extra to buy. I tried the Goodrich thing and it has a great sound for dobro but you have to turn all the bass way down and make too many adjustments in-between songs for me to use it. Also the Cat Can is played just like a dobro so the similation is the same. |

John,
For the present, I'm just going to rest the Catcan on the pad and run a cord to a Boss A-B box to switch from one to the other. If I really want to get serious about dobro, I have an 8 string "Dobro" that I bought several years ago that is the real McCoy.
