The hard part here is the third part with the lower melody moving around the upper harmony. That can be found using the 1st string open and the sixth string fret 1, 1B, 2B,1B, 1, open, openB, open, or 5th string with the A pedal on the 5th fret with 8, 8F, 7th string, 8F, 8, 8D, 8, 8D. The second part can be played using strings 4 and 6 at fret 5, 6F, 5, 3, 1F. As Buddy Emmons once said “Take a lick you like and find every position on the neck to play it”. I use the lick at the 5th fret a lot when I need a lower voicing to the melody of a song than I can get on strings 3 and 5 or I am playing in a pedal down position and don't want to jump around. Of course you can always play it in the upper register from the 17th fret or split it up from 5 and 12. I don't care for it that way myself. Hope it's helpful?

I have always played it in A with the bands I have been in and as an instrumental. What key is it supposed to be in?

I have found the key any song is 'supposed to be in' is the one the singer uses. I understand Tom Brumley didn't play this song the way he really wanted to because of the key it was recorded in and the fact that the instruments were tuned 1/2 tone flat to accomodate Buck Owens.
