E9th, C chord A and B pedals down position (fret 3)

This is very Paul Franklin/Mike Johnson and I learned it at a Steve Palousek seminar. Rooted in Minor pentatonic.

Thanks Bob, but that's the only one! I have plenty of his speed picking talk tapes that I have yet to get through. Putting tab on here is such a pain in the rump. If I get some time, then I may put some links to my site after I publish some.

Thanks again for the encouragement!

Frank,

Does he cover a lot of these PF licks on his talk tapes?

Where do you get them?

thx

The tapes have been off the market for some time.

He transfered a few to CD and sells them at http://www.paul-franklin.com/instruction.htm

I appreciate these licks whether they are speed licks or licks at my speed, but sometimes some of the licks found in the Tab section are hard to use without hearing a context from where the lick came from.

I still have found some though--the use of this one is obvious. Thanks to all of you tab donators.

A favorite and simplified Mike Johnson variation (sort of) of this lick: (A and B down)

5:--2A-->3A------------------------------

Frank (or anyone)

How are you fingering this? I'm having trouble trying to pick block it and I guess I'm not used to palm or finger blocking anymore.

thx

Bob, there is not one "correct" way to finger it. It sounds best if you play it fast. I think I use the thumb and middle finger in an alternating fashion except for string 3 on which I use the index finger. Obviously, I am only referring the latest lick above. Just move fast and put those fingers back down on the strings. It should be "controlled panic!"

Actually, I meant the original at the top here but I know what you mean. Do you pick block it?

Yeap, I pick block and one correction is that I start each lick using my index finger and then use the thumb for the next string. The third finger blocks what the 2nd finger picked when descending, meaning: moving the hand toward me.

As for hand position: I tried keeping the 3rd and 4th fingers extended beyond the 1st string and resting on the neck like Herby and Doug and it is comfortable, but for me, it affects blocking cleanly on a lick like the first one in a negative way.

Keeping all the fingers up on the strings in the "baseball" position like PF, Rugg, Mike Johnson, T. White and others is the way I do it. I was having a numbness problem with my right wrist and it has more to do with typing and holding a mouse and that is when I tried some other positions.

As for pick blocking: I think it is the best way to go and I started doing it by accident at some point. Two points about it: 1) wear your picks close to your fingers and 2) think about getting your fingers "into the strings" meaning: "in between them" and get use to putting the picks back down on the strings by practicing licks at various speeds.

I guess I still do some palm blocking. It is all subconscious now or perhaps it is unconscious!

I use pick-blocking also with an occasional palm-block but when pcik-blocking, that little "zzzzzit" I hear when the pick approaches the string is annoying. Can this zzzzit be heard thru the amp? I can't really tell.

1------------------------------1----
2----------------------------------
3------------------------- 1--1-------
4---------------------1--1---1---------
5---------------- 1--1--1---1----------
6------------1--1---1--1---------------
7--------1--1--1---1-------------------
8-1----1---1--1-----------------------
9-----1---1-------------------------
10---1-------------------------------

This whole phrase is all on one fret using thumb and second finger only
(or what you prefer) with the E to Eb knee (4 and 8 strings) lowered
Start on the 8th string with your second finger and it alternates..
finger, thumb, finger, thumb and so on
On the first fret it would be in the key of C

This can be used as a lick or ending making the 5th string your
last note and not going any farther

Here's the same pattern using your A pedal down through
the first part of the lick and finishing with the
B pedal down..almost the same but not quite. Also can
be used as an ending lick. Pick the last note only once and
then press your b pedal. This would be in Bb

1------------------------------------

3------------------------------------
4------------------------------------
5------------------------------------
6-------------1--1--1b-------------------
7---------1--1--1-----------------------
8-1-----1---1--1-------------------------
9-----1----1---------------------------
10---1a---------------------------------

an extended version of the above lick

1--------------------------------------
2--------------------------------------
3----------------------------1b----------
4----------------------1----1-----
5--------------------1a---1a----
6----------1--1-1b-1b---1b-------------
7------1--1--1---1----------------
8-1---1--1--1----------------------------
