Well here's how I play it on Bop-a-billy Swing!" (each slash mark is a new bar; a comma indicates a split bar).

1/4/1,b7/67/
2m7/57/3m7,67b9/2m7 57b9/
1/4/1,b7/67/
27/27/2m7/57/

5m7/17/4Maj7/4Maj7
27/27/2m7/57

1/4/1,b7/67/
27/57/1/2m7,57/

By the way, it's in the key of "1"

Thanks Jim. It was the last half of the second line that really had me going. I'm looking forward to seeing you next week in Denver.

Hi, Bob:
That would be one variant of the 3-6-2-5 turnaround. Look for it in lots of jazz tunes, especially at the ends of verses or sections.

I'm a little apprehensive about playing the show in Colorado: I think I'll be the only guy there not wearing a Mullen guitar. Don't they still have possees up there? Yikes!

Hi Jim
You should be scared, not apprehensive, it's pretty rough out here in the Wild West. With the lady sherrif (Tiny), Dick (Clark Kent) Meis and Lois Lane to protect you you'll probably be OK. See you Sunday!

Maybe one of you can answer my question about this great tune...in particular, referring to Johnny Cox's version of it on his 'Shuffles' CD.

I won't try to tab this but just discuss it...assume the song is played in Bb... Johnny plays this pattern just after the first line of the song where it resolves to the 1 chord at the 5th fret, strings 3, 5, 8. Each chord is 2 beats; all are strings 3, 5 and 8.

Position 'a': 5th Fret, no pedals (1 chord)
Position 'b': 3rd Fret, pedal 7
Position 'c': 5th fret, no pedals
Position 'd': 5th fret, pedal 5...
then to the 57 chord for the second line of the verse.

Note that the top note "F" remains the same throughout the pattern. What are these chords?

Thanks,

bUd

Hi Bud,
Johnny Cox's version of this tune is great.

FWIW, here's the way I think of that transition:

BbMaj7
Bb6
BbMaj7
Db#9 (for this chord, try 4th fret, with the 8th pedal; resolve down one fret to Cm7 on the 3rd fret before going to your 57 chord by kicking in your 5th pedal at the 3rd fret)

That #9 chord adds a really hip transition to the 2m7/57 chord. I believe Johnny uses that too.

That quite a coincedence. I just bought that album from Frenchy and it one of my all time favorites (along with your of course Jim! : )
I really like the clean and precise playing Johnny is sooo good at. I think i'll go somewhere and cry myself to sleep can bring tears to you eyes.

Thanks for the info on the chords Jim.

Great transition Professor Cohen. I'm finding that I can use that one all over the place. Thank you for all the input on this.
