Hi Rayman. I don't have that CD or song; so I would have to hear it.
If you can come up with a clip of the steel section you are concerned with; I would be happy to give it a listen and a whirl for ya pal.

I gave this song a listen last night- this is a tough little solo! Here's what I came up with - I'm pretty sure this shows the basic scale positions, phrasing it like Paul Franklin is a whole 'nother story! I'm linking a sound bite of the solo, it's fairly large, around 1MB and the last couple notes got chopped off, sorry. Suggestions, comments, corrections welcome.

Mike,
I listened to your clip (were there any notes missing in the beginning?). This is what I hear in the first half. The most significant difference is in the beginning. My guess is that Paul is using the C pedal to get those drops. It seems to naturally fit the lines he's playing. Just my guess. Thanks for the tab and the clip.

Jeff,
I think the very first note might have got partially clipped - I also tried the beginning using the B & C pedals, but just couldn't make it fit. It's strange, sometimes when you listen off a recording, you work it out a certain way and then if you go back later to it, you can hear the notes that you missed with no problem. I'll have to go back to this one in a couple of weeks to see if I hear anything different. Thanks for your comments. |

I listened to the wav.file and found some hard to hear notes missing in the tabs. I tried the start with the B-pedal release but it did not feel right.
I don't know if P.Franklin has F#-G on first string but the fingering below on the start felt real good to me.

Note: in the first line, instead of releasing A-pedal at 13th fret you can slide to 11th w/Apedal down. That way the Apedal can be held down for the whole first part. My guess is that it is a pedal-release.[This message was edited by Bengt Erlandsen on 06 May 2001 at 08:12 AM.] |

According to the Forum Tunings section, Paul doesn't have a half-tone raise on the first string. |

I actually had a chance to listen to this and had my steel in the same room(what a miracle)> I can play the first section 4 different ways and all being the exact same notes. But to me; tabbing isn't just playing the correct notes or something that will work or is close or plays easier> it is really getting into the actual way the player played it with his copedant. I don't get it right all the time and do end up with something that is almost perfect and plays ok; but knowing and studying the way these players play something; is an art form in itself. Every player has certain patterns of the way they play; and as I tab and have tabbed tons of different players; I get used to their patterns and string selections with their set up; and it comes up all the time. Jeff Lampert does this soooooo much better than I do; and I thought I was getting pretty good till I look at his tab. Jeff; to me; has an ear that is a step above what I could hope for and I picked through this one, and I'll have to say> to my ears and tenure of the strings and the way Paul plays; I'll have to go with Jeff on this one.
But don't get me wrong; I'm not gradeing here; and I'm not trying to come off like "yours is good and yours is bad"; because I truely believe one can get pleanty out of playing something several different ways and I ENCOURAGE that more than almost anything. Remember my greatest idol is Lloyd Green and I'll never forget his words about something like this. "figure out how to play something; then figure it out two more different ways".
So all and all; having several guys throwing down tab to the same piece is more better than just one guy tabbing it. That is why I like this thread cause there are three different tabbers doing the same piece; and three different ears come out a little different. But one should not be discouraged and one should not feel like their piece is better than the other; it is a family here and we all love each other and the steel guitar, in the MOST humble way I would hope.

Mike, Jeff, I hope I didn't offend you by saying I heard some hard to hear notes missing in the tabs.
I don't know very much about the way Paul Franklin plays certain licks so my position could be all wrong.
But I am pretty confident that the notes are correct even if the position is not.
This is all about sharing information and not a competition. I learn a lot from the tabs posted by other members.
So learning to play the same thing in a different way is something I will support 100%
