Hello,
I am just starting on the steel (and getting frustrated rapidly). I got my first one just the other day, and can't really play any of the tab that I have gotten. Can anyone out there tab some ultra easy, pre-beginner tunes? I am also having trouble rolling from the B pedal to the A, while keeping the B down, so any tips would be gratiously accepted. Thanks guys!! |

Save yourself countless hours of frustration and get yourself a good beginners course for pedal steel. Both Joe Wright and Jeff Newman have excellent courses available. Another excellent source is Winnie Winston's book or DeWitt Scott's "Anthology Of Pedal Steel Guitar". All these and more are available from Scotty's Music.

Wouldn't hurt to try and find a teacher to help you out either. There is a whole lot more involved than just playing the tab. I went that route for the first year I had my steel and finally realized I wasn't getting anywhere. Ordered the Newman "Up From The Top" video series and that was the smartest thing I did since buying my steel. Should have done it right from the start and I wouldn't have thrown away a year! Amazing how much I've learned in the last 3 months!!

You address is "CO, USA"? Does this mean you might live in the Denver area? There are three instructors I know of, Dick Meis, Dell Mullen, and Chuck Lettes. Chuck is a member of the Steel Guitar Forum and also does "mail-order" instruction if you don't live close-by. Chuck lives in the SW Denver area.
Dick Meis also lives in Denver but doesn't monitor the Forum. I don't believe Dell Mullen does either. Just search the Internet for Dell or Dick and you'll find them.

Dude, Learning songs at your point in the
learning curve is a BIG BLACK HOLE. You
don't have the time to learn songs at this point. Do youself a favor and take 3-6 months with Joe's technique bundle. Study
the layout of the E9 tuning and know where things are cold. If you move to learning songs too soon in a couple of years you'll know

Try Dick Meis at "www.dickmeis.com". He's a great guy, great teacher (IMHO since I am one of his students). He lives up on the north side (Thornton Parkway and I-25). He just opened a steel guitar store and teaching studio at 64th Ave and Federal. I know of at least one student that drives up from Colo. Springs for lessons.
Anyway, give him a call.
