Hi

I've just acquired one of these beauties, they were the FIRST hawaiian guitars Gibson made.I think in response to the "Frypan".
This one is "Pristine"
(I will post a pic later)

Production of this model ceased on March 9th 1936 after complaints from Field salesmen that the customers thought the metal body did NOT have the look of quality and craftmanship associated with Gibson.
Only 98 were EVER made.
How much is it worth ?
Baz

I agree with you on the aesthetics -- I think Raymond Loewy would approve.

I seem to recall reading that under stage lights, these were a nightmare to keep in tune, and could literally get too hot to handle. Fact or fiction?

Basil: How much is it worth? To any serious lap steel enthusiast, a Gibson metalbody is priceless! Given its rarity, aesthetic beauty and enormous playability, your new guitar is as desirable as any steel guitar ever made. If I had one of these, it would take a lot more than four thousand dollars to tempt me to part with it. Just before I started collecting lap steels, a store in a small town near here sold two of these guitars for a fraction of what they'd go for today. Missed by that much . . .

The serial # of mine is 207.
Now this is very strange, the one from e-bay is 170, Jack's was 118 ..... How does this relate to the 98 that they made.
How do the serial numbers relate to date of manufacture or invoice or what ?
Just for fun the three guitars would be numbers 8, 9 and 10 ... IF you added the numbers of the serial number together. But the notion of month numbers or week numbers doesn't seem to fit with the numbers we have.

I thought numbers started @ 100 but #207 blows that theory if 98 were made. Jack

Could it be they started with 150 and ran up to 248? Might make sense for a model 150.
