I just acquired a National Dynamic with legs. The legs must have gone unused because where they telescope in, they look great. Where they were exposed, the chrome (or nickel?) is sort of discolored but it is not rust. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The simplest way to bring back the shine is to get some medium and fine steel wool and rub them really good, also there are mildly abrasive polishes available at the auto parts stores, some of which recommend using steel wool as an applicator. If it's really bad, you could use rubbing compound and/or polishing compound as well.

Michael: I've done this same job many times and have always got great results using Flitz. It's a metal polish that's gentle enough for jewelry, but can also remove pretty substantial rust spots. It should clean up the discoloration easily.

Ian, would polishing with 'Flitz' remove the tarnish from under the strings in front of the pickup on my Frypan?

Thanks Ian. I just ordered some paste Flitz. Seems it also adds some protection and I remember reading about it over on the pedlers board. I plan to use it on the pickup as well.
