There is a lick that Lloyd plays that goes from the 5 to the 1 in the middle of the verse. It comes up in both verses. It is a great lick and I have heard Jim Murphy and Norm Hamlet play it also.

If you're talking about Slid Off Your Satin Sheets by Paycheck it was Jim Vest who did steel on that record. |

To my knowledge, Jim Vest was on the record. I saw him play the tune at the Hall of Fame Motor Inn in Nashville in the early 80's and he re-tuned his 10th string to "A" with the pedal down, (and I assume to a "G" with it released). Sneaky, eh?

Big Jim tunes his tenth string down to a F# and with his A pedal, he pulls it back up to G#. It's a great lick.

When I saw him at the Hall of Fame in Nashville, he tuned it to A. The band played it in A, and he duplicated the lick exactly. Was really cool seeing how to get that lick. Of course Big Jim may also tune it to many different notes for different reasons.

It was Jim Vest who played Slide Off. He did tune the 10th string so it raises to a A with the pedal down. Ithappens to fall at about an F# before you raise it. He used the same trick on a couple of Vern Gosdin songs. I'm currently doing the Paycheck gig such as it is. I say thart because John is sick a lot. He tells me he wants to try and go back to work next month if he feels up to it. Here's hoping. As for the tuning. Jim V told me this info himself. bset wishes! |
