For two months now, great/new Hawaiian music has been created on stage every Fri/Sat. nite at the Pacific Beach hotel in Waikiki by a dynamic duo. While the local media(and HSGA) hasn't picked up on it yet, Bobby and Kelii Kanealii(1/2 of Hapa)are creating true music and breaking new ground playing an interesting mix of Hapa tunes, a few pop classics which includes Beatles material(!) and new compositions. Show times, 7:30. Bring an open mind and enjoy what may lead to another rennaisance in Hawaiian music. It's not often we get to witness the next 'beeg ting' before it really hits. 5-0

The HSGA now knows about it. Thanks Ron. I will add it to the "Who's Where" section of the HSGA website, the page that lists live Hawaiian steel and where to find it. Give me a few days.
In addition to being on the board of directors of the HSGA I am also the organization's webmaster.
We will be moving the HSGA to a more robust web provider in the next month. Watch for new content including photos of players, convention shots, vintage instrument pictures and listings of currently working (and available) Hawaiian bands.

Sounds good Gerald, the site needs another shot in the arm. There are plenty of steel happenings in Hawaii that fall thru the cracks that should be prominant on the site. I made the great Palace/Akuna and 'soundies' gigs mentioned in earlier posts only by luck, and my antennae are always up for such. Other than the HSGA's forum, is there a way to get quick notice of events from veiwers to the site, for last minute info? And it seems the local media(TV,radio, print), City and State officials are totally oblivious to anything steel related, as tho they could use a steel upside the head to wake em up. I relise your volunteer army can accomplish only so much, so thanx for doing what ya'll can!

Good ideas Ron.
Maybe a page on the HSGA website that lists one-time gigs or special events involving steel guitar will do the trick. Our "Who's Where" page only lists recurring gigs (i.e., every Thursday from 5-8 PM etc.)
Send the special listings to me (gbross@umich.edu) and I will gladly post them. Give me some advance warning though.

I like the idea of a page on the HSGA listing currently working Hawaiian combos of all sizes (solo, duo, etc..), where they're located in the world, and maybe a link to their websites, if they have one, etc...
I do some Hawaiian solo and duo work here in the St. Pete/Clearwater, Florida area, and this would be a nice addition for HSGA members, and the site itself.
Mahalo!

Two things...
1. The HSGA website has been updated to include the afore mentioned Bobby Ingano gigs.
2. When the HSGA website moves to our new web provider we will be introducing a page that lists currently working Hawaiian bands, Hawaiian Steelers etc. A brief description of their music/band and contact information will be listed. This listing service will be free of charge for all current HSGA members.

I don't know about the other person, but if Bobby Ingano is half of the mix you can't go wrong! I had the great fortune to see and hear him play twice during my first visit to Hawaii this summer. Bobby loves playing and it shows every time he touches his guitar. He is absolutely one of the best performers I have ever seen or heard! I agree, Terry. I caught Bobby a couple of times on my trip to Waikiki last summer: A great player with excellent stage presence...a real nice guy too. The "Who's Playing Where" is a valuable part of the HSGA site. I printed it out and took it with me. I caught GREAT steel playing in beautiful venues every night (I won't even talk about the hula dancers!) I look forward to the revamped HSGA site.
Haere mai,
Steve H.

Terry, if you listen to the Hapa CDs you will be amazed and stoked that BI has hooked up with such a talent as Kelii Kanealii. They may be adding a bassist/singer to the group to complete the overall sound as BI doesn't sing, yet. Kelii's former partner, Barry Flanegan, also has a fine solo CD out now, he's a great songwriter and a killer guitarist. The local media is bemoaning the loss of Hapa, and rightfully so, but now we will have twice as much to enjoy from the two camps. Who knows what the future has in store.
