I just got word that Bruce Clarke has finished Vol 5 ....
He also said Andy Iona Vol 5 will be ready by the end of the month ...

The first four Andy Iona CD's on Cumquat are heading my way as we speak. A Christmas present from my lovely and talented wife.
A much better present than socks and gloves.

Get ready ... Since Bruce Clarke's recordings introduced me to Andy Iona ...
My entire approach to the steel guitar has changed ....
It is amazing what can be done on a single string ...!!!!

| Hi Rick, my girlfriend Sheri is a fellow musician and very hip. She bought me the first four volumes of Dick McIntire as a gift last summer. All I can say is we listen to these CDs that Bruce Clark did his engineering magic on, almost every morning for breakfast and for candle light dinners. It's easy to see why Hawaiian music of this type was so popular. When I hear Dick McIntire sing and play his steel, I feel I'm hanging out with a very good soul... |

As I mentioned in a previous posting, I received the four Andy Iona CD's this last Christmas. These disks are all I've been listening to for the past month!
Andy Iona's music was a perfect mix of traditional Hawaiian, Hapa Hoale and Pop Standards of the day. The style of electric steel on these recordings bridges the gap between the earlier 1920's acoustic and the modern day chordal "C6" sound. The material and arrangements are very accessible to non-Hawaiian fans too.
Regarding Pop Standards, Andy Iona's steel playing on Tommy Dorsey's "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You" is incredible in the fact that much of the melody is done on one string. Also the four tracks featuring Louis Armstrong show the far reaching influence of Hawaiian music in the 1930’s.
Get these disks!

| I would also HIGHLY recommend the Hawaiian Hotshot CD's...Bruce is playing steel. If you like Dick McIntire and Andy Iona, you'll love these as well. I just got them both and have been listening to them non-stop for the past few days (in fact, Dick McIntire and Andy Iona have been put on hold, waiting in line to get a spot in my CD player ). The Hawaiian Hotshot arrangements are great and the steel playing is superb! |
