I just looked on Brad's lapsteel page to see if there is a mention of Steve Dawson. I read about this guy before going to visit Toronto last week. Fortunately the band, Zubot and Dawson was touring through Toronto(They're Vancouver based) a night I was there.
They were incredible. Steve plays a Larivee or something for fingerpicking, a National Tricone, and a Neil Russell Weissenborn.
If anyone is looking for something fresh to listen to, Steve and the band play in a style similar to the Flecktones or Strength in Numbers, but I heard influences in Steve's playing from Kelly Joe Phelps(He told me they just recorded his next CD with him a few weeks ago as his backing band), and Bob Brozman. Some really inventive slide guitar music with a Zubot, who played violin and mandolin, along with an upright bassist and percussion/drummer.
Just thought I'd mention him, if any of you are looking for something new on Weissenborn. These guys are great.

Geez, Dwight, you sweep into Toronto and snatch up a beautiful guitar that should've had my name on it, then just for good measure
you tell me I've missed a great band at a club less than a mile from my home. You really know how to hurt a guy, don't you?
I'd heard that Dawson was a player well worth seeing, but I didn't have the chance to make the show at Hugh's, unfortunately. I'll be sure to catch the band the next time they're in town.
By the way, you mention that Steve plays a Neil Russell Weissenborn. I think there's been some discussion of these instruments here before, but for anyone on the lookout for a Weissenborn copy, Russell's instruments are certainly the best bargain I've come across.[This message was edited by Ian McLatchie on 29 November 2002 at 11:32 AM.] |

Sweep in... I just went back to some forum topics from October with the discussion from Ms. Cashdollar and I got the instrument they mentioned at 12th fret.
I'm still a little confused with the chrome plates - I thought they were all black and white in the late 40's/50s? Was it an option on the BD?
Anyway, if I get up there we'll have to go check em out together. I really liked Hugh's room, too. I need to send them a press kit...

I'm emailing you an .mp3. I had just installed Cubase on my PC, as well as installed a Pickup The World pickup on my style 1 and asked my friend to play something. He did a little Kelly Joe Phelps style ditty on it. Pretty much captures the beauty of the instrument and the pickup sounds like a microphone.
If anyone else wants a copy, let me know - it's about a 1.2 meg file.

You're welcome. I don't know if my friend Thomas is going to appreciate me sharing this file. It wasn't his Weissenborn and mine is setup with higher and tighter, bigger guage strings than his, so he fumbled a bit, but I love his vibrato, I can't do that. He can play better on an unfamiliar Weissenborn than I could ever play on my own.
