I saw Billy play many guitars through a variety of amps. If he was following another steel player on stage, he just plugged in and started playing. I think it was all in his great vibrato and his right hand blocking. You know Billy had this glove with a bar attached and he told me that it ticked him off because iy was impossible for him to do a reverse slant. If I was a guy with no left hand and could play like him I sure wouldn't worry about reverse slants. Great man and great player. CC

Aloha Aikane,
Most of the time Billy Hew Len used a Fender Twin Reverb.
(BTW Mahalo Nui controversial posts elsewhere) www.waikiki-islanders.com

For those who do not have it, the 70s video
'Hawaiian Rainbow' has fabulous live footage of Billy with Genoa Keawe. It's just a few songs but the camera work will knock you out and the music is the best! The rest is a montage of music and dance, you'll dig it. It's out on DVD now and can be found on ebay under Hawaiian music(and I'm not the seller). Enjoy!

Do y'all have the Hawaiian Rainbow DVD. It's only 10 bucks and Billy Hew Len plays a song or two on it. http://www.hulasource.com/hawraindocby.html

I vaguely remember a tiny little tweed amp at his side - I'll have to watch it again. As I was just getting into hawaiian steel I read about his story and then on a whim I bought this DVD, only to find him ripping it up.
Anybody know of any must have steel videos to suggest?

Dwight

I just watched the clip. I'm no good at identifying amps, but it looks like it might be a cube amp, like a Roland.

I get the impression that BHL played with a pretty light bar (relative to, say, the JB Dunlop) and pressed real hard on the strings.
