I just heard the most fantastic recording of "Now is the Hour" -- I literally stopped dead in my tracks when I heard the intro!
Burl Ives was the vocalist, and the steel playing was sooo fantastic it *had* to be JB...
Did they make an album together? I can't find any Hawaiian albums by Burl Ives on Amazon.com...

Jeff,
Jerry did indeed record and album with Burl Ives titled "On The Beach At Waikiki" Decca DL 74668. The songs on the album are: Drifting And Dreaming, Beyond The Reef, My Isle of Golden Dreams, Now Is The Hour, Sweet Leilani, The Moon of Manakoora, Song of The Islands, Keep Your Eyes On The Hands, Hawaiian Bells, Little Brown Gal, On The Beach At Waikiki, and Aloha Oe. I have the album. You may be able to pick one up on ebay some time. |

Unless its pointed that I'm mistaken, I believe JB also did a couple of 45's with Berle Ives: Close The Door Richard b/w Left My Gall in the Mountains; Pearly Shells b/w What Little Tears are made of; Brighten the Corner Where You Are b/w Great White Bird. All three are Decca, of course.
Everything JB did, was unequalled, and he recorded with a ton of different vocalists. |

I second your nomination for Dr. Carver!
There's a funny story, although off topic, related to Burl Ives. It seems he was chosen to play "Big Daddy" in the Tennessee Williams play "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" after the playwright saw Ives "physically subdue" a heckler during a nightclub show. Just cracks me up to think of the warm and fuzzy Burl Ives beating someone up! There's no business like show business like no business I know... |

That's funny, Chris! You're right -- it's hard to picture Burl Ives getting mad at someone!

There is a disconnect in my mind about this one:
Burl Ives on the beach at Waikiki??
Burl Ives = cable knit sweaters, pipe tobacco, egg nog and plaid bowties.
Has anyone heard this record?
