This picture was taken in 1956...my Dad had already been playing this Steel for a year or two.
Anyone know the exact model?

I think Herb is right. You can see the trapezoid pickups next to your Dad's right hand. From that angle, you wouldn't see the pickups on a Stringmaster. Great picture.

Thanks...I'm pretty sure you're right, he sold this the next year and bought the first model Pedal Steel made by Fender. I have a picture of that one too that I'll want to run by you guys for model verification.
Just trying to put together some of my Dad's history, he started with a Hawaiian style Lap Steel when he was 10 years old...I'll need help identifying the brand/model on that too...still scanning pictures.

Your dad is playing a Gibson. I don't know what your mom is playing; but I do know, that is Buddy Emmons sitting in the background observing, because he's wearing a derby.

Wide panel Pro. Great amp 25 watts with a 15 inch jenson. I think they only made the wide panel pro in 53 and 54. |

I think the amp is a Fender Deluxe, it seems too small to be a Pro. Anyhoo...

I still say its a 54 PRo.
A wide panel Deluxe is 15 inches tall, if the amp was sitting right next to him the top would come about half up his calf. In this picture the amp is behind him and comes up to his knee. My wide panel Pro is 20 inches tall and comes up to my knee.
Now if the steel player in this picture is only 5'2" then I'd say that a Deluxe but if he's around 5'8" or 6' then thats a PRO.[This message was edited by Alvin Blaine on 18 October 2002 at 12:16 PM.] |

Early Pro amps had what they refer to nowadays as a TV grill..

That amp only appears to come up to his knee due to the camera angle. It's actually closer to the adjustment grips on the legs of the steel. I would estimate about 15 inches, give or take an inch.
The real clue is the mic stand base. It's smaller that the lead singers shoe. estimating his shoe size at about 11, the mic base is around 10 inches. Using that for scale, and rotating it's length to become perpendicular to the horizon line, it's roughly 2/3 of the total height of the amp.
Multipy by 1.5 and it'll be right around 15 inches.
I vote Deluxe.

I have two wide panel Deluxe's and a wide panel Pro. The amp in that picture is not a Deluxe. It may be a wide panel Bandmaster, from 53 to 55 they were the same size as the pro. Or I could be a super they were only 18 inches tall but a little wider with two tens.
The "TV grill" amps were from late 49 to about March of 53. And I have a TV grill deluxe also.
I still say its a 54 Pro, do you want the serial number? |
