Buddy Emmons impressed me with his great pure steel tone in this song. Unlike anything I heard him play before. It sounds to me like a steel tuned lower than C6th. But who has more info about it.

The intro sounds like moving into a 5 chord from 2 above, on the D, 9th string.
The tune is in C, so he's starting that G7 stuff at fret 5. I agree It does indeed have an interesting low sounding resonance in this mix...

Are you sure that is Buddy.

That almost sounds like a non-pedal steel.

Thanks Donny, Andrew and Bill for giving me your opinions. Bill; yes I am sure, it is stated so in the story in the CD`s booklet and apart from that, it is one of Buddy’s signature licks. But what I was curious about was the timbre of the playing like his guitar was a “baritone” steel like there are baritone 6 string guitars. It might even be a software thing. There used to be one-octave-below pedals and Buddy was always experimenting with tone. And yes the thought of a non pedal guitar crossed my mind to

In 2004 Buddy lowered the 10th string on the E9th from B to G#.
Not sure on which guitar, maybe on his JCH?
Maybe you are hearing this low note?

I agree with Andrew Frost, it's a great lick and one he used at the end of verse 1 in Judy Collin's "Someday Soon." I nicknamed that lick "sagging into the 5 chord"!

It wasn't unheard of for Buddy to play other people's steels on a session. Perhaps this is a 12 string extended tuning, with a little more low string range?

I was told the whole album was Buddy’s “Brown Bart” Emmons LeGrande into a Brad Sarno “Black Box,” thru a Goodrich Volume Pedal into a Nashville 112.

It’s on E9. I’d play it this way…

‘Seems I got hung up trying to find the lowest possible voicing / timbre for those first few notes.

Appreciate ya!
