Who plays pedal steel on "Tell Ole I Ain't Here, He Better Get On Home", Moe Bandy & Joe Stampley's 1979 session?
Billy Sherrill placed it in the mix hotter than hell🔥
Tone sounds like Sonny Garrish, but who knows? |

Weldon and Buddy are both credited on that album, but this sounds a little bit more like Weldon to me (he played on nearly all of Moe's recordings back then) – though it sounds a bit like a Buddy lick as well towards the end. Great song! |

Good info, Per. That's one of the loudest steels I've heard on a record, in a good way, the way it ought to be, louder than the vocals.
Close second might be Sneaky's solo on Rondstadt's I Can't Help It If I'm Still in Love With You.
Per, if you don't mind me asking, does steel get noticed much in Sweden? . . . is country well-known? |

Hi Mark! Most of Moe Bandy's earlier recordings, the ones produced by Ray Baker, feature lots of loud and really great steel playing.
There are quite a lot of country and bluegrass acts in Sweden, some really good ones, but few of them are drawing big crowds – playing country over here is a labor of love in most cases. What we have in abundance is "dance bands", who often play country covers and write country-ish tunes (their style is often called "country with a German beat"). Most of them use pedal steel on their records, some on stage as well. But not many people know what a pedal steel is. A wild guess would be that there are significantly fewer than 500 steel players over here, and sadly only a handful making a good living out of it.
Here's Berra Karlsson on steel with Cina Samuelsson:

Janne LIndgren (1944-2013) played steel on many thousands of Swedish sessions, an old clip from 1975:

Per, Great tracks & steel pickers all--no slouches there!
Sweden's quality trumps quantity . . . beats the heck out of lots of U.S. alt / neo-trad / Americana stuff. (Not that it's a competition, but stateside Kudos.)
Thanks for sharing. |

Steve Hinson FTW!
I played with Moe back in the ‘80’s and he told me it was Buddy on that… _________________ Tommy Detamore
