Back in November, Jon Light started a thread on the NOS Sho Bud Pro-era return springs sold on Ebay, pointing out that the NOS ones were slightly different from (and longer than) the originals. I posted there that I had just used the NOS springs on both necks of a 1982 Super Pro I refurbished last summer and they were working fine. They still are.
But!
More recently, I acquired a 1979 Pro-I, and swapped out all of the return springs (which were a motley collection) with the NOS springs. For the first few weeks, they were working great. Until this morning. My sixth string whole-step lower on LKR was not quite returning to pitch, but would snap back up to pitch if I hit it with the B-pedal half-step raise. My first thought was that the finger had "The Notch," since that hitch on the retun is the classic symptom. I went to the trouble of pulling the finger, prepared to swap it for another finger with less of a notch. To my suprise (and relief), there was no notch at all on the finger. (Which jibes with my impression that this steel has not been played a lot in its 45 years.)
I reassembled everything and the hitch was still there. My next guess was that the spring was not strong enough to pull that .022 plain back from a whole-step lower. So I dug out an old Super Pro return spring and, voila!, no more hitch. I won't have a chance to really work it today to confirm the problem is solved, but I suspect the NOS spring was the culprit, confirming Jon's concerns in his earlier post. |

Dealing with the springs, And knowing how to shorten, lengthen, Tension, Pick the right diameter spring and spring wire diameter for proper operation. Is how you get your Wizard Wand bestowed upon you.
A couple year ago I got a MSA Classic, Someone had put larger diameter wire Carter Lower Return springs on it. Could not get a C to A lower on C6th neck, Without the raise lever pulling off the stop bar, Till I got an original MSA spring. |
