has anyone owned a Japanese made fuzzy steel? did you like the tone? I have heard they are well made and are light weight but do they sound good?

I have one. It’s extremely well made. Sounds very Emmons-y. Look at this post and read what Mike Cass has to say about them (page 2, toward the end.)

“Excel used a hybrid type changer back then which incorporated the traditional Sho-Bud "comb" type axle mount which itself was part of the neck casting, therby owing a nod to the Emmons bolt-on.Those particular guitars have a very Emmons p/p-like sound to them. Ever wonder why you never see any of them for sale?”

I have an EXCEL S-11 that I’ll be selling soon. It sounds great and is perfect for travel.

I bought a new guitar from Fuzzy a few years ago. it had a fine tone all its own but didn’t really compare to my LeGrande when I played them side by side. tone is subjective of course but I ultimately let her go.

I know most Excel players are quite happy with them, and for good reason.

I have owned several and still have 3. Excellent guitars, I’m not a single coil guy, I’ve changed them to Telonics pickups..great players and easy to work on. This one is a 2010 S10.. Very Happy

Assuming you are counting Excels as "Fuzzy" steels (technically they are), I have a c. 2000 D-10 and love it! Plays great and sounds great, and lighter than my Super Pros. I'm normally a single-coil guy, but the George-L PFs that came with this sound great, so I haven't messed with it.
