Thanks Dale, I’m sure I will, this is my second Legend , and I loved my first one, but sometimes life happens, and we do things we don’t really want to do… _________________ www.steelguitarsonline.com |

Cool guitar! Since this thread is about MSA steels, seems like a good place to ask this: Why do they have chess pieces for fret markers? |

MSA has used chess pieces for fret markers since the Classic series about 1970. |

Yes, I've seen many photos of MSA guitars with the chess piece fret markers. Just wondering why the chess piece theme. |

If you're curious about the chess deal, you might find the ZB reasoning interesting! _________________ Best lyric in a country song: "...One more, Moon..." |

It's a simple question: Why are there chess pieces for fret markers? Do they really like playing chess at MSA? Was the guy a chess champion? Is there some as yet unknown to me connection between pedal steel and chess?
And, yes, I've wondered about the markers on ZB guitars, too. They look like some sort of stylized illustrations of Roman Centurion heads and banners. Are you able to elaborate?

Since Reece, Danny, and Tommy are all gone, you would need to ask Kyle that question.

maybe slightly off-topic, but I wanted to ask:
Does anyone have an idea what the ZB position markers mean? I've looked at all the others and largely get the logic of them, but the symbols for my ZB are mystifying. Is it a military ranking thing? |
I remember asking Bobbe Seymour that question when I worked for him at Steel Guitar Nashville, he knew Zane well and told me that Zane said they were all condom labels. True story! The obvious one is for Trojans, I forget what the others were. I think Sheik was one, not sure of the labels, never used em.
Anyone have a Marrs fretboard pic? Duane had a nice looking fretboard. |

Kenny, that's gotta be one of those urban myths, right? Maybe someone here with a better knowledge of condom logos can verify, eh? |

Who knows? Just reporting what my investigation led to!
Regarding your question - Perhaps Sho~Bud and Emmons already had the cool symbols? The chess pieces are classy, and those were classy guitars. I was honored to meet Reece and visited several times, and he seemed like he could have been a chess player. I still think that either Kyle or maybe David Wright might give some insight.
By the way Damir, that's an absolutely stunning guitar you have! _________________ Best lyric in a country song: "...One more, Moon..." |

....from an earlier forum post. Maybe we can answer the MSA symbols question and keep this thread tracking about Damir's stunning Legend.

A direct quote from Reese Anderson. It was quite easy to find.
"Tom Morrell and Danny Shields, who were originally the M & S in MSA, were building a guitar in the very early 1960's called the Morrell Shields Custom. They had selected chess pieces for fret markers before I became involved and the MSA company was formed.
I wanted to continue to use the symbols even on the new MSA Millennium because my feelings have always been, "the chess pieces provide the perception of a dignified and intellectual connotation".
I of course cannot speak for Tom or Danny as to the reasons behind their decision to use them originally!"
thanks

My apologies for hijacking this thread. I did find online that chess is historically known as the game of kings. So chess piece markers make sense since steel guitar is the king of guitars. And Demir's guitar is certainly kingly. |

No, sorry, it's my bad. It's not my place to scold anyone. I posted too hastily out of weather related cabin fever irritability.
It's Damir's topic so long as he's happy with the discussion, it's really none of my business.
Peace Out. Happy New Year everybody. |
