Most players didn’t know of cabinet drop until electronic tuners came into existence, why worry about it? Is your bar placement 2 to 3 cents accurate, I would say no. Learn to play it and make it sound in tune with bar technique, don’t worry about cabinet drop unless it’s really off the charts. _________________ Henry Matthews

I agree with Henry on this. The player's contribution to intonation is surely paramount?
We removed the Counterforce from my LG111 - I can't detect any difference without it, except that it's lightened up the pedal-action a lot.
That's $280 I won't get back, but I 'bought' the hype. _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

All PSGs show cabinet drop to a degree - if you tighten a string, the others will go slack. The question is whether it's noticeable to the ear and not just the tuner. Even if it is, it should be correctable, just like all the other minor adjustments we have to make. _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

I don’t know if it’s a curse or a benefit to hear 2 to 3 cents. I think a curse because I don’t believe anyone can get their bar that close every time, especially in faster music so if they hear that, that’s a curse and will sound like never in tune to them. I had friend, the late Jack Matthews, that could play a guitar that was OUT OF TUNE, and sound like he was right on the money. It’s not cabinet drop, it’s bar technique. _________________ Henry Matthews

A coupel years ago i tuned a couple steels he had. One was a double neck infinity
I just tuned the e9th. I started with the pedals down to 440 on 4 and 8 after that i tuned strickly by ear no harmonics. I just made each note sound like i wanted it to sound like if i was backing a band. It seemed like to me there was only one spot that each string sounded really good with each other. After tuning and Johnny played it, he seemed to think he liked it about as well as ever. He later told me that 2 other excellent player played it and seemed to get that feeling. I realize many people can tune like this. But me being i guess an average player i like being able to tune like this. I wish i was the player that these guys were. It is enjoyable to hear a steel when it has that feel and tone. It takes me a while to do it but its awesome. Iv been wanting to program that to my peterson tuner. Apparently there is one sweet spot for each note after
You put your E's where you want to start.

The Infinity prototype started as EMCI. Not sure where that guitar is now. Tommy Detamore owned it at least a couple years ago. Not sure if he still has it though. But EMCI, and the Rangexpander, at least the ones I have owned and the one I still have, have the same attributes of the Infinity you all are describing. Near zero deflection and no hysteresis. This makes it great for tuning with harmonics as previously pointed out. For me that is the preferred method, however impractical in a noisy club trying to get ready. Using the tuner after the guitar is as perfectly tuned as you like, then I am sure many players will make a note of each reference frequency to A440. This way those perfectly tuned instruments can be generally retuned using the meter. I have used this method for 30 plus years. It works very well regardless of the differences between different guitars. Finally it works exceptionally well on the EMCI. |
