The knee levers on my MSA classic are held in place by a bolt or machine screw that keeps them suspended between two brackets. The nut on one end of this bolt sometimes falls off and now I've lost one. Can anyone tell me the dimensions of this bolt, and will any old machine screw do the job, or does it need to be a special part?

I would advise using a "locking" nut, then it won't fall off.
Take the bolt with you when you go looking for a nut.

From looking at the bolt in the picture, The nut from the way the end is domed is a Nylock nut, With a nylon lock ring in the dome.
The bolt should pass completely through the nut for full contact with the nylon washer, To lock on the bolt. (Looks like, Somewhere along the way the bolt has been replaced.)

Being an old MSA Classic owner and mechanic, I suggest you measure the distance through the mounting bracket. Find a longer bolt with a smooth section of bolt that will pass through one side of the bracket and the knee lever swivel plate. (If my memory is right, The original bolt had about 1/2 inch of smooth shaft before the threads.)

This will give the swivel plate a smooth place to move on. The Aluminum Bracket swiveling on the bolt threads will cause the hole in the swivel to wear oval.

You will have to cut some of threads off the bolt to get the proper length.
Good luck on this problem, Happy Steelin.
