| Who is playing steel on Kenny Chesney's recording of Away In A Manger. It was posted on You Tube in November of 2008. I don't know when it was recorded. |

The steel player in Kenny's band has been Jim Gairett for quite a few years. Jim was with the Gairett family band from Montana in the '70s.

Jim is still with Kenny-he plays a Mullen. Before that, he played a red Zumsteel. He switched to Mullen in 2006.

| Jim Bob's been with Kenny since 1998. Before touring with Kenny, he was Sammy Kershaw's steel player. When Kenny took a year off, Jim Bob and his Mullen played some shows with Sammy. |

| Jim Bob is a great player...somewhat of a child prodigy,really...been playing steel since he was a kid and just about as good as they come,really...as for his boss...I believe Jim Bob would agree with me that they don't come any nicer or better to work for...we have both benefitted from the generosity of Mr.C... |

I never will forget in 2002, when Kenny played the Opry to celebrate George Jones' birthday and sang "Bartender's Blues", Jim Bob played a great steel solo, and in the middle of the solo, Kenny introduced him and said, "Jim Bob Gairrett on steel guitar, y'all! I actually learned that same solo for when I do "Bartender's Blues" at shows now. Jim Bob was playin' that solo on a red Zumsteel.

Just ran into this old thread about Jim Bob Gairett. Now I'm dating myself, but in 1973-4 I was working 6-night-a- week clubs in Billings, MT... and everyone kept telling me to check out the 16-year-old pedal steel guitarist... I believe he and his brothers were working at the Ramada Inn, also 6 nights a week back then.
Having only Monday nights off, I didn't meet many other players back then but I did run into Frank Carter (Infinity Steels), back when he was in the "Big Sky" band. Wish I had taken the time to meet this now very polished steel player.
If you haven't heard him, I caught a few "instructional" videos on YouTube (about 3 years old).

| I have known Jim Bob since he was 10 years old and playing pedal steel with his brothers. He was a good player then a great player now I am sure. I saw him with Kershaw at the Colorado State Fair but I don't remember the year. I was in the audience front row in one of the large tents and heard someone calling my name from the stage and it turned out to be Jim Bob. I was totally surprised that he would have remembered me after a lot of years. Talked to him on the phone a while after he had left Kenny's band. Great young man. |

| I don't remember Paul Franklin playing on Kenny's records, it's possibly Sonny Garrish on "Away In A Manger". On Kenny's Greatest Hits, several steel players are featured-it says Steel Guitar-"Cowboy" Eddie Long, Jim Bob Gairrett, Sonny Garrish, Mike Johnson. It could be Sonny on "Away In A Manger" |
