Herb, you had an awesome run!

I never mentioned it to anyone, except Joe Rogers, but when I retired from the Byrd gig I had some hearing issues. I think mine were caused by my lack of knowledge in utilizing my IEM’s and not being vigilant about pursuing an effective remedy while touring.( I was too easily frustrated and just kept performing with the equipment I had….bad mistake.. It’s all my fault.
Currently, I play out only occasionally and according to my last 2 annual hearing tests I haven’t suffered any further losses. The ringing is only occasional , but I HATE how I’m forced to ask my wife and others to repeat themselves.

Good luck to you and I hope you find fullfiment in other endeavors.

Herb: I totally understand and respect your decision. I'm sorry to learn of the hearing issues with which you are dealing. I have some hearing loss myself but, not the intonation issues.

Arthritis, needing two new knees as well as cataract / corneal transplant surgery have helped put my desire to play gigs away. The knees and eyes will be fixed but, the arthritis will remain. Like you said, the other unrewarding issues involved with doing gigs anymore pretty much seal the deal. I'll play a special at church service a few times a year but that's about it.

My love of bass fishing has not diminished at all. Like you I have decades of tackle, rods, reels and boat parts in the garage. The bass-boat is winterized and put away for the next 4+ months and I already have fishing withdrawal but, my desire to get out on the boat fishing is as strong as ever. I don't do tournaments any longer thanks to the knees and arthritis but, still get out often. Can't get enough of it !!

Enjoy yourself Herb. Get out on that Skeeter and have a blast man !!

I didn't mention it in my last reply, but I think we all aspire to have a musical career as notable as yours. You definitely ran with the Thoroughbreds!!
Best of luck in whatever you do.,.!!

Sorry to hear this Herb. I’ve been suffering with it too. I haven’t noticed pitch or at least relative pitch issues yet. I’m 63. It may just get worse over time. It’s a bummer. Hang in there bro. I feel like Tommy said. It’s hard to imagine no herb steiner live on stage in centex music scene. But I understand.
