Hey there,
I’ve been playing open D for years. I tried A6th and C6th and I was almost able to make sense of em. Well, about a year ago I had Bob from Melbert make me a double 6. I hadn’t had a double for years and I spec’d it with my measurements that were comfortable, it made it easier to reach the back neck. This Melbert is amazing! Anyway, the front neck is open D, and on the back neck, I tried A6th etc. When my band heard the 6th tuning, they liked it. But it wasn’t easy figuring out where to play in G for example vs.playing the open D neck. I knew where the A was. I kept open D on the front neck and added D6th on the back neck. It made moving back and forth really easy…5th fret is a G and I can play both necks now, D6th in G is the 5th fret.
My question is this, are there many players that do this or do they stick to the
Open D, then maybe C6th on their back neck?
Thanks for listening,

Steven, I understand your dilemma.. I am also struggling with changing tunings on my lap steel. My guitar is tuned to E6th. I chose this tuning because of my history with the guitar. I really Like the E tuning because it has a higher pitch when compared to A6th or C6th and sounds good with country music . I am considering Dom Franco’s A6th extended twelve string tuning. However, I want to raise this tuning to an E6th extended tuning. |

Hi Steven, as far as you having issues playing the key of G in A6th goes, this is a common issue.
The most straight forward solution would be to use G6th tuning instead, so tune everything down a whole step.
Guys who play G tunings have the equivalent problem with F.
This thread about it is long but has a lot of interesting ideas and opinions, just mentally replace “G” with A and “F” with G :
