Hello all,

Sorry about the slow response; things got hectic with relatives affected by the California wildfires.

Toshiyuki: Here is the photo you requested earlier. As you can see, I have removed all of the half-stop setscrews from their holes adjacent to each string (making this a non issue).

I think you may have hit on something with the space between the changer and set screw mounts, as this is very narrow. If you look at the 2 red (non-parallel) lines, the widest gap at the bottom string is about 3/16” and the narrow gap at the 1st string is about 1/16”. Not very much room to allow a changer to move underneath.

Also, I pushed the changer with a screwdriver (as you suggested) and the E note would not drop all the way to the D note. So, something is definitely restricting the travel movement. I got around this by moving the D note to the 9th string (compromise).

Marshall: Yes, it’s possible to get a bit more travel if I reverse the bell crank, but honestly at this point, I have the tuning 95% to my satisfaction for now.

Larry: I will probably order some of the non-threaded barrels (set screw) at some point. I want to play this thing for a while before I decide to play mechanic again. Also, I would love whatever documentation you have on the Excels. Please send to my email at john@ventucasa.com Thank you.

Not sure if it figures into the issue you're having, but I second Justin's suggestion to swap out the nylon barrels for metal ones. I did this when I got my pre-Superb Excel and it made the instrument way more stable. I also made all new pull rods just to have a fresh start. Not sure that was necessary but it meant I didn't have to find out. Added benefit: I got pretty quick at threading a rod after the 20th or 30th one! Laughing
