Joe Rogers and his tonex amp captures

Shout out to Joe Rogers for his tonex amp captures. This pedal would be useless for steel guitar if it weren’t for him. He’s captured allot of the great steel amps……Sho-Bud, Buddy Charelton’s personal Standel Custom XV, Peavey nash400 fox and LeMay mods, session 400, Webb, Evans, Little Walter and more! He’s also modeled some great cabinet IR’s too. It’s a pain staking process to get these amps captured and he has done a magnificent job and continues to diligently create new ones. He also does quad cortex but I don’t have that. Thanks again Joe, you’re wonderful!

Joe's captures sound pretty awesome from the reviews I've read.

The ToneX is totally useful and awesome for pedal steel guitar though even with the stock sounds. With a few tweaks, the tone and reverb on the stock Tone X beat out my Nashville 400, Fractal Axe 3, Quilter Travis Troy 15, Princeton Reverb and home built 6V6 tube amps.
I have used this pedal with my MSA Legend D-10, Excel S-10, Excel S-12 D13 and Sierra S-12 D13 guitars with spectacular results for practice and recording.

The ToneX is even better now that they are releasing the delay, rotating speaker and other effects as a free upgrade to existing units.

I own a lot of amps and I don't want to brag about them, I don't want to list them here. I've owned a Quad Cortex (this is something like the big brother of the Tonex) for about 3 months. Joe Rogers explained this beast to me and opened up a whole new world with his captures and impulse responses. I've never had such a sound in my 32 years of playing pedal steel! I no longer go on stage with one amp, no, I go on stage with 15-20 steel amps and play with the amp that I like best! The Quad Cortex also has countless fantastic sounding effects in it... the combinations of amp, speakers and effects are endless! And even if you don't like fiddling around with sounds, you quickly get an absolutely fantastic, crystal-clear steel sound that always comes into its own in the studio, live on stage or at a jam! I can play in-ear or monitor or with a power amp (currently Ashdown Bassamp) with a Speakercabinet from Tommy Huff with a TT 15”, always just what it needs! The weight and volume that you have to transport is also no problem for my bad back! Joe Rogers deserves to be thanked 1000 times over. He's not just a monster player, his name should actually be Doc Cortex. I hope Joe shows as many steel players as possible what sounds are possible!

Guys, thanks so much for the plug..!! I started this journey some years ago with the Kemper. The newer entries (Neural DSP & IK Multimedia) incorporate AI within the modeling and it produces much more accurate results. The technology seems to be changing about every 2 weeks and sometimes it’s all I can do to keep abreast of it. As we speak, Neural released the Nano Cortex a few weeks ago, and in a few days IK will release a major effects upgrade to the TONEX. I have a FAQ document that I am in the process of updating to provide ALL of the information to help you decide which route you want to go. I should have the document complete tonight or tomorrow. Most of the guys posting here have the TONEX, Andy has the Quad Cortex, go on Facebook and look up Matthew Begay. He came to one of my Tracy Byrd gigs and ordered a Quad Cortex the following week. Look at his videos older than the last 3 weeks and then listen to his newest videos. And he is playing an older MSA. I’ll let you be the judge.

There are 2 Tonemeisters I have the utmost admiration and respect for…Johnny Cox and Tommy Detamore. BOTH of these guys are old school amp guys (as I am as well). Both of these guys are the players you would expect to be holdouts against this technology. Johnny came to my house and experienced it. He now has TONEX incorporated into his live gigs. Tommy is wading in at a more cautious pace, but know that he has already opened the door to the technology and sees and hears the possibilities.

I don’t consider this technology to be amp replacement, but rather amp preservation. Tommy has some wonderful Standels, Johnny has some wonderful Sho-Bud amps. These precious antiques are not something you want bouncing in the back of a trailer hitting potholes. By creating a sonic duplicate, you can have your cake and eat it too. And in the case of these particular amps, by utilizing the newer power amps, you can now have a 350 watt Sho-Bud single channel…..power that didn’t exist back in the day.

To those of you who think it won’t sound or feel like playing through a real amp, I defy any player to get on Johnny’s TONEX rig or Andy’s Quad Cortex and play through one of my presets, close your eyes, and tell me it doesn’t sound or feel like the original amp. The tech is here. It’s real, it’s light, and it’s GOOD. It isn’t meant to replace your beloved amp…it is meant to preserve it.

I have the Standel and Sho-Bud captures from Joe for a little over a month now. I use the Standel capture a lot, played through the return of my JC-45 and I really like the sound. It really captures that hifi crispness. I’m still tweaking the settings looking for my sweet spot.

For those that want to upgrade the Software on their pedal, this guy has good videos. Even though the new version is 1.8.0, the pedal itself will say 1.5.11.

The laptop will be 1.8.0. As long as you have your pedal hooked to your laptop, it will upgrade it with the Delay, reverb and modulation effects.

Anyone have any good Standel or Sho-Bud amp settings they want to share?
I play through an amp with speakers, so I don’t use the IRs unless going direct, in which case I use my Neural DSP plugins. I relly like the hifi sparkle of the Standel without an IR. The speakers in my amp can accommodate some of that..
