I went ahead and ordered the large JD reso pick from Blue Chip. Should have it in a couple days. I will probably try a couple others mentioned here. Again, great conversation. Thanks for all the replies. |
The Blue Chip is a great pick for me. The size is perfect and I can pick with real confidence now. Now all I need is to actually know how to play! By far the most expensive pick I own, but I certainly don't regret the purchase, it's worth it to me. Great conversation on thumb picks! _________________ RICK ABBOTT

Wanted to revive this thread as a shout out to everyone's input that was very helpful. My favorite thumb pick, an XL ivoroid Recording King, broke in half as I returned to steel recently after a 2-year break.
Unsure of what to do, I read this and several other threads, and ultimately picked up 5 picks from the forum's store. It's great that you can order just 1 of whatever picks you want--that let me try 5 different thumb picks! Everywhere else on the internet I looked, I had to buy 3 or 5 or 20 picks that I'd never even seen before!
As for sizing, all I'll say is that there must be a lot of tiny thumbs out there. The Dunlop XL fits me best, but I like the smaller picking surface of the L size picks better. Time to boil 'em!
Again, big thanks to the contributors and to the forum store!! |

I am a newbie and I have not been happy with the fingerpicks that I acquired from different people not knowing they are an important part of our sound. I just ordered the Dunlop .020 fingerpicks after reading on the forum someone liked them. The Brass .020. Then I bought what is called a speed thumb pick which is orange and has the pick part split twice and the middle part is narrow and longer than the outside split parts. I bought these from Epperly equipment business again off an ad on the forum. I feel that these 2 new styles or additions are really giving me the accuracy and tone is different than the old gimme’s I was using.
My 2 cents

Yeah, the Forum store has the friendliest and fastest fulfillment of any source for the steel player, nice selection of bars too!
I wanna add that since my 2021 comments I've retried the Golden Gate and it fits pretty well, gotta wiggle it around and find right angle, as it's constructed a bit differently that other brands, but it's nice and meaty. |
