Hi everyone, this is my 1st post. I've been spying on this forum for years! Such an incredible source of information. So much so that I never needed to post... just a quick search, some reading, and I always managed to find the info I needed.
I've been learning & playing for some time. Started on lap steel in 2005 and made the move to psg in 2010.

Anyways, time has come for me to join this forum, as I'm currently taking up a project that might require some help from the knowledgeable forum members! More on this later.

For now, as a ways to introduce myself, let me drop some pics of my main weapon... early 80s Sho-Bud Pro I that was heavily modified by Mr Bob Lucier, long before I aquired it. Thought that might interest some of you S-B enthusiasts. It was 3x6 when I bought it, I removed 2 levers so now it's 3x4. It plays and sounds absolutely fantastic.
It has been in my possession since 2011.
There you go...

Nice guitar! What mods did Bob do?
Looks like what you have there is a late model Pro II with the rear neck removed. Pro I's weren't on a double body.

I thought the same, but there is no cutout on the endplate for nylon tuners on a bottom neck. Of course, the endplate could have been replaced with one from an LDG. If it was refinished, the Pro 1 sticker might have been what Bob had on hand. Of course, this could have been a custom build from Sho-Bud.

The little bit of the undercarriage that is shown looks like the stock Super-Pro (pot metal) undercarriage with maybe the added foam.

It looked to me like the pot metal on some knee lever parts was replaced with milled aluminum. That’s a good thing if that is true.

My bet is that its a re finned, somewhat reworked LDG, with a Pro I slide decal.. Thats the only Bud that I know of that would only have a single endplate cutout on a double frame... However as Ricky always tells us, Sho Bud was a custom shop and would really build anything you wanted, and I imagine if someone requested a black single neck double frame with a Pro I decal, they would have gladly done that for a customer. bob

My guess has always been that it was a Pro-I with an added armrest and custom endplates. That would’ve required that he glued the part for the armrest to the Pro-1 body, and refinish the whole thing.
That’s what I thought was the ‘custom work’ by Bob L.

The fact that it could be a reworked LDG or Pro-II with a Pro-I decal, or a custom order from the factory, didn’t cross my mind. Very interesting!

The steel is at my practice space, when I go back I will take more pics of the undercarriage for you to see.

Unfortunately the person I bought it from is no longer with us, I bet he could’ve helped. He was a man of venerable age, had 4 or 5 steel guitars for sale. My only concern at that moment was to buy the best sounding, smoothest playing instrument, so I played them all (at least 3 of them were S-Buds) and put my money on this one.

Another odd thing about it is the copedent. It is standard Emmons setup but check out that LKR:
Lowers 2nd string, 1 step (D# -> C#)
Raises 9th string, 1 step (D -> E)

I was dubious at first but just left it this way and now I find myself using it quite often. Very cool for a straight major to 7th chord with that 9th string movement, among other things.

The E lowers (E -> Eb) are on RKL.

I remember going to Southdown Music back in the 70s. I met lots of great people there.

It’s the tuning wrench. It fits in a hole on the top and is attached to a string fixed to the body. Pretty handy Smile
