Yesterday, I decided that my faithful Emmons LeGrande was looking decidedly grimy!

'New strings', I thought, '.and a good clean-up while I do it!'

All well and good until I realized that, of the hundreds of sets of strings - and the individuals - in my huge drawer (all accumulated from when I'd get them for nothing), the newest were at least five years old! Some were much, much older. I even found Emmons Gtr Co C6th strings with Ron Sr's picture on the front.

'The object is to clean the guitar', I said, so I went ahead and changed all 20 without having any regard for the dates I'd scrawled on the wrappers.

The E9s were 2011, the C6ths were 2003!!!

They sound as bright as I could want. Have I just been lucky? I'm in FL, albeit in air-conditioning. I have no tarnished spots, just 'new' strings that tuned-up beautifully.

Roger, you did exactly as I would. I'm not tossing new strings with old dates on the package. I keep mine in a dehumidified environment and hope for the best. I think you came out well.

Keep um in a ziplock bag with a moisture absorbent bag, I've good results with that method. Get the moisture absorbent packs at tractor supply.

Congratulations, Roger. This proves what I have believed for a long time. I still have a couple of GHS Guitar Boomers 6-string 10-46 sets left of the several dozen ones I bought in bulk more than 15 years ago from Stew-Mac (at less than $3 per set...), and there was nothing at all wrong with the last set I put on a couple of months ago...

I'm sure Bill is correct in his method, but I feel I've managed okay just being lazy.

I'm retired now and strings would be an expensive item on a regular basis.

I admit to buying some especially for my Super 400 - my electric strings (10 to 46) wouldn't do the job on that guitar.

Smile
