I play acoustic guitar on "Paris" and Buddy on steel and Terry Wedding on Guitar. Terry was a student of Lenny Breau's.

At Hilltop Studios, Buddy and I were working up a song and I was playing lap steel. At some point I decided not to do it.
Engineer John Nicholson, had recorded some practicing and a little later in California, I recorded a lead pedal steel part. Buddy playsthe harmony part:

Hey Chris,
Very nice music! Really well arranged, lots of variety and interesting twists and turns. Buddy sounds better than great. Man, this is a real exposition of his imagination and fluidity.
And why did you decide to not record Light Trash? It turned to be an interesting piece of music!
How was it that you and Buddy cooperated on this album? Is there a background story?

Thank you Dan - Buddy made the arrangement of "Paris" and he charted it all out.
"Paris" came about because I was producing a record by the Kauai Boys". Titus Kinimaka, KIoni Mahuka and Tommy Tokioka.
I was set to play pedal steel and We were booked to record at Kludgett Sound, in Cerrillos, N.M.
The production thing didn't work out and me and the Kauai Boys parted ways.
The studio owner ended up recording and producing their record AND told me I was obligated to use the time I had booked.
I had sent Buddy a demo and he was slated to record on the Kauai Boys record.
Instead, I recorded "Paris" with Buddy, at Hilton Studios in Madison.
"Light Trash" was originally written on lap steel. We worked it up in the studio, but I wasn't comfortable with my single note bar intonation.
I had the rhythm track and I was house sitting in Mill Valley, CA and overdubbed my part on an Akai DR8.
On side note, Titus Kinimaka, at the time, was the 9th best big wave surfer in the world.

Great story. Especially the surfer bit! The lasting memory of my only visit to Kauai is watching the amazing surfers. Their skill is mesmerizing.
Of course Buddy’s playing is great and he makes some interesting sounds and the arrangement is a work of art, but my favorite parts of the Paris tune are the tapper solos. It’s so unexpected and it hits me in the funny bone. Thanks for posting, Chris. |
