I feel like I've been preparing for this my whole life. My connection with my parents' 45rpm records forever cemented my love for doo wop and rock and roll, and I feel at home playing all music through that prism. I've always had a burning desire to do this with classical music. The goal is to create an arrangement that I could comfortably play with a rock and roll/jazz combo with guitar, bass and drums.

I recorded this version of Clair de Lune in my home studio, playing all string instruments. While the recording was done very quickly, I feel like it really took time for the arrangement to solidify. I take liberties with the music but avoid reharmonizations for the most part. Oh, and the steel guitar I used was Sol Hoopii's personal guitar.

Feel free to listen, no strings attached. You don't need to pay anything to listen. Thank you in advance.

That is so f’ing cool! It sounds like something Danny Gatton or Junior Brown would do, twisting some rock n roll into a classical piece. Really enjoyed it. Keep going.

PS- I also can appreciate the monumental undertaking of making this piece sound like it was made for your arrangement. I listened very casually because I was simply enjoying it without engaging the analytical part of my brain. Having played the theme on acoustic guitar, I know there are difficult passages that you had to adapt for the steel (and the other instruments) which you accomplished seamlessly. There is a descending double-stop riff you played on the steel about 3/4 of the way through that totally blew my mind. I could not have cared less about time-signature changes, but I know they were there hiding in that awesome guitar/bass accompaniment.

I know you take pride in advancing the steel guitar by taking it into genres it is not normally associated with, but I think you can also take pride in this one being a very creative rendering of a great piece in the interest of its own musical advancement. If that makes any sense…

Thank you gentlemen, and yes, Fred, my only interest is in playing this music to the best of my ability and in a way that is most conducive to the way I play and hear music. While some of my arrangements may seem gimmicky at first listen, that really isn’t my intention. Am I a little corny? Yes. But hey, if you don’t have a sense of humor playing lap steel, you ain’t doing it right.

Beautiful!

Debussy is my favorite composer of all time and "Claire De Lune" is tied with the "Arabesques", "The Sunken Cathedral", and "Voiles" as my favorite pieces of his.

I can't help but think of the breathtaking Hunter's Moon we were blessed with in these parts a couple nights back while listening to this piece. The moonlight on the creeks and streams was something to behold. Great stuff Mike.

Very nice, Mike! Sweet without being cloying.

Got me thinking of this version by BJ Cole.
