Topic: MSA "The Universal", 3R/3L changer rod and rod thread sizes |

I am going to start redoing the setup of my "old" MSA "The Universal" with the triple raise/triple lower changer ("Designed by Bud Carter" Sticker inside... so, I guess one of the later versions), which I have not yet have held in my hands due to being traveling abroad.
I need to order rods and thread the ends.
I would be interested if the rods on these late models are also 1/8" diameter or something else, the thread type (so I can order rods and dies) and would appreciate knowing the bell-crank shaft diameter also.

Any chance you have bell cranks with their lock-barrels for sale?
Anything else I should consider on that guitar, since I am going for a full teardown (upgrades, cool ideas)?
She seems to be of the latest models. Red too, so ought'a play pretty fast!

| I have a very few left- mostly 2 hole bellcranks and a few locks- you can get them from McMaster Carr as standoffs- the proper size as I recall is 5/16" tall- .25" in diameter- the 3/8" tall ones will work and less exspensive but a titch too long. They both need to be drilled for the rods- I usually drill them .140" and made a lil jig for that. |

Last year I went through early 1970s D10 MSA Classic. It had Aluminum, Stainless Steel, Carbon Steel and Bronze welding rods for pull rods. Looked like a junk yard under the hood.
I ended up pulling, cleaning and tightening rivets in both changers.
I bought a 5lb. tube of 36" X 1/8" Stainless Steel welding rods at a local welding supply, And replaced many rods in the guitar.
I bought a 6-40 die to match the original threads on the the guitar rods. I found a 6-40 die at the local Ace Hardware.
I have a MSA Classic Cross rod/Bell Crank shaft in my MSA junk. I measures .375/ 3/8" diameter.

A suggestion JD. PSG has sets on of 13 plastic changer spacers in stock. It is good to have a set when rebuilding a MSA Classic.
They seem to break and work their way out from between the fingers over the years. |

THANKS... yes you're right, they didn't age well!
I might cut my own from a "Teflon"-like plastic.
Scissor mechanism are a "problem". I don't like so many aspects of the them... the rivet thingy... etc.

Delrin / Nylon are very tough and durable and have proven to resist the test of Decades. I just punched some collared bushings out of some 70's MSA rails to re-use. They have some discoloration but remain indestructible. I would not qualify them as a "lubricant" replacement as PTFE (aka. "Teflon") could be.

If you are removing unused plastic cross shaft bearing to use on the guitar. check the fit close with the cross shaft. I done that on the MSA I worked on.
Seemed they had puckered in length. And the hole had gotten smaller and tight. I had to ream them a little, For smooth cross shaft rotation.
Another thing that looked simple to do, But took more work and effort than planned. Lucky I had the proper reamer laying around.
