ADAMS 8 String Resonator Guitar by Jim Adams of Texas. In very good condition (see photos) with minor player wear. As told to me by Jim Adams, this guitar was custom built for a professional road traveling pedal steel player. The guitar is laminate and leans more toward a purple cast than the photos I supplied. I believe I am the third owner.
The guitar is deep - 5"- and is loud. If asked to describe the tone I would say 'throaty and growly'. It holds its own on stage. Very gutsy on a mic.
The guitar is tuned to standard 8 string G6 and has a typical No. 14 spider and spun cone. The guitar has two modifications that I know of...
The trapeze tailpiece shown replaced a fixed tailpiece sometime before I got it. The ghost of the fixed tailpiece can be seen in the chrome plating of the cover. The hand rest over the bridge has been removed to expose the top of the bridge and strings - without a doubt to allow palm blocking used by a pedal steel player.
The guitar has a few minor player scuffs.
The guitar comes with a gig bag and will be well packed when shipped.

I'd like to address an inquiry I have about this guitar.
It's a nice guitar. Jim Adams builds 'em tough. His technique, after I've viewed and touched several examples, leans toward overbuilt in my opinion. His neck joinery compares with my Clinesmith for fit. He uses pretty standard spiders, cones, tuners and covers. His go to is an open well with sound posts.
It sounds great. A big body.
But, to be clear, for $850 + shipping, it is not a Beard, Scheerhorn, Schoonover, Clinesmith, Rayco, or Redline.
This custom made example is an excellent stepping-stone guitar.
Jim explained to me via phone call that he built this one to specs provided to him by a professional pedal steel player. I've learned that the original owner used it as he needed and sold it when his project was finished.
I bought it from the second owner (I think here on the Forum) because I wanted to explore acoustic G6. I almost exclusively play E9 and C6 in our band.
The guitar worked fine in a band using a 57 through a Fender Twin then to the board. But...it became one more thing to pack and carry along with already too much other junk on stage. I've let it sit idle for some time now and don't plan to revive its use. |

I have an 8 string Adams, and I think Michael's description is very good. It's a very solid and well made guitar and it sounds great. No, it's not as refined as a Beard or Clinesmith, but it's still a great guitar, and at this price it's a real bargain.
Just my .02...

Thanks David...I try to be transparent when I sell something.
Maybe it's just interpretation, but some folks seem to just assume that everything written about a sale is suspicious... when it's not.

Let's face it.
You need this guitar to flesh out the array of instruments you'll need to honor any possible song request.
You are getting sleepy...your musical mind says "8-string reso for all the western swing tunes you need to play acoustically."[/i] |

I have one like this and while you might not be wagging your butt on stage with it, you could drive a truck over it and it will probably still be in tune. Loud, great sound and you can really pound on it. Woof!
I would never, ever sell it.

Hahaha BJ...
Usually on stage I'm so worried that I left my fly open
that I never think about "butt wagging" as part of our show.
Gonna talk to the guys tomorrow... |

Well, that's for the young guys. I play sitting now, but love those guitars. That trapeze is the Adams standard and the cone would be a Beard.

Thanks BJ...
I've had several conversations with Jim Adams about this guitar. He was very gracious and helpful. In fact, he sent me a new set of bridge inserts at no charge.
I'm puzzled that this guitar hasn't sold. It is a nice instrument and fun to play. I'd be using it all the time if I didn't have a double neck console to play with the band. |
