I’d like one-10 string conical if you ever get to it. Another steeler tells me that the conical bars are more accurate for keeping the bottom strings in tune with the octave strings above. As one plays the eye lines up the edge with the fret and the lower strings have more length to vibrate and thus stay in tune as you go up the neck.

Erv and Lynn - I have you both on the list for the sizes you want, thank you friends!

David - thrilled you are loving your bar! The Jerry Byrd size will just be cylindrical for this first run in that size.

David and Tom - I'm happy to look at the slight conical shapes moving forward. Very interesting concept. Does anyone know what the taper angle would be by chance, I've never played one?

Best,

Mark

Here's a llink to the BJS site showing the difference in the two noses (conical vs spherical on the Byrd bars): http://www.bjsbars.com/uploads/5/3/9/2/53929007/s729880201997496383_p28_i2_w2560.jpeg

Thank you David,

Great photo showing the difference - very interesting. I am happy to make the tip more conical on those for those that prefer it.

Here is actually the type of bar I was talking about. Only having the same size base and length, but the entire bar tapered. Let me know if it’s possible.

Dick,

Thank you for your following up. I am hoping to have materials supply issues sorted by April-May this year for those of you patiently waiting. It's still an uncertainty with all that's happening in the world, but I sincerely hope to get there. Thank you all for your continued patience.

Tom,

I see the overall taper in that bar - very cool. I hope to eventually be able to offer a wide range of profiles like that. If I can get more established, I will certainly entertain more custom shapes and sizes in the future. Thanks for the photo, I will definitely keep that in mind and reach out to you if it becomes a possibility. If I have extra material to work with in this next run, I will try to make a demo piece like that and see how it turns out. If you can measure the diameters and length, email the specs to me zirctone@gmail.com.

Thanks all, I will be in touch with those of you on the list as soon as I have bars ready!

Mark

My preferred lap steel and C6 neck bar right now is a Basil Henriques bar that tapers from 3/4 to 5/8 over 3 1/4" plastic bar. I'm using a Zirctone 7/8 bar for E9 and am quite happy with it.

I go back and forth between the tapered plastic bar and the BJS Byrd bar on lap steel...I'd love to try a Zirctone of either style.

I would love a 3/4 x 3" zirc bar. The Jerry Byrd is just a bit short for eight strings.

Mark is the Absolute Best Producer of Zirconia Tone Bars on The Planet!
Hands Down! 2nd to Nobody, No one anywhere! These Bars are so Specialized
That I want to put them in a Jewelry Grade Category! Expensive? of course! but when you read up on Marks production Techniques he uses to create these piecies it is nothing short of -“Amazing” when I ordered and received my first ZircTone ToneBar…I was absolutely Taken aback! at the Jewelry like quality of the bar, I mean…the feel, the touch, and how it warms almost instantly to the temperature of your hand was simply mind boggling! The sound, the buttery smooth way it glides up and down the neck of any pedal steel is amazing, with absolutely “NO” noise. I immediately became aware of how Special this thing I was holding in my hand actually was! So I ordered a 2nd Bar immediately, and I’ll never look back!
The only way to find out how wonderful these ZircTone Bars really are…is to purchase one.
These are harder than steel smoother than the best Stainless Steel Bars, and I’ll go so far as to say there’s absolutely nothin on todays market that can beat them. They are that Special!
Every Pedal Steel Player in and around the world should seek out and purchase a ZircTone Bar to add to there collection, (Before Mark Retires or stops making them, then the price for one will be ridiculously high!)
Order yours, while you can.

Respectfully,
Jeff Mercer

I asked for a 7/8" 12 string bar 10/17/2021 and never got a response. I'm guessing that Mark isn't making the bars now.

I ordered (2) different size bars from Mark within the last (2) months and it took about 3 weeks to get them made and polished up but they are Gorgeous! They come in a beautiful Leather pouch too!

I just want to put my plug in for these wonderful bars. Just got mine (7/8”)and spent a couple hours playing with it today. I’ve been playing a BJS bar for several years and I love it—nice full tone, and very smooth. The Zirctone is subtly different in tone. Still very full and rich sounding, perhaps a bit more in the mid-range to my ears (of course everyone hears things a bit differently and loss of hearing in certain frequencies over the years doesn’t help!). Point is, it is a great sounding bar.

I cannot discern a difference in sustain and as far as I am concerned both bars are equally smooth and about the same in terms of bar noise on the strings, again, to my ears.

There is a very discernible difference in weight. The Zirctone is 6.1 ounces versus 8.5 for the BJS. When I first held it in my hand I thought it was going to be too light and require a lot of additional bar pressure. Not the case at all! It plays beautifully, is highly maneuverable and just feels great.

Obviously not the cheapest bar available but I’m very happy I shelled out for it. I won’t say it’s better than the BJS or vice versa. They are both great bars (the best of the best IMO), with some different qualities. I will say if you want a lighter weight bar that doesn’t sacrifice tone, feel, sustain, playability or anything else you can think of, this is the way to go.

Thanks Mark!

How long did it take to get your bar? I’ve been in line for over a year. What did you do to order your bar?
