37 Electar mystery holes

I always wondered what these holes on the butt of my old Epiphone were for. The second picture is not mine but one I saw for sale.

Just to protect the wood or maybe for a stand?

I think they were pretty standard on these steels. My '41 Century has a smaller one that's attached with 4 brads.
