Has anyone done this, or heard of it being done? |

My very first six string, built for me by my father, has this set-up. Works for me. I supplied the hardware and pickup and I can't remember if I bought a stock Fender or other brand but it is designed as a Tele neck pickup, looks aesthetically pleasing and definitely sounds ok! |
Sounds good. I didn't know the Limehouse Blues had lyrics. 👍 |

Back when Ted Smith was still in business building Melobars he had a model called the Teleratt that had a Tele bridge and pickups. They sound real nice. |

Why not? The original Tele pickup was sort of based on Leo Fender's lap steels. |

You're thinking of the Tele bridge pickup. Those Fender lap steels had, essentially, a Tele bridge pickup. I'm asking about putting a Tele neck pickup on a steel. I've never seen it before or heard of anyone doing it. Just curious. |

Yes! Thanks for this input. I found a YouTube vid of one of those and it DOES sound good. I was particularly interested in how a Tele neck pickup would sound. This vid gives a good idea, but the pickup is mounted in the neck position. I'm hoping to find out how one would work in the bridge position, but at least this gives some idea of how it sounds.

Did you have the pickup mounted near the bridge, or toward the end of the fretboard? |

FWIW, I had a Cougar 6 string pedal steel with a Tele neck pickup. It sounded just fine, but I was not overly fond of it and would have preferred a slightly heavier tone.
|
Did it have that Telecaster "honk" tone? (Not that it's what I'm after, just curious.) I have an orphaned Tele neck pickup I've thought about putting in a steel that has an opening it will fit into, but don't want to go through the hassle if it's a real "stringy" "honky" type tone in the bridge position.
I didn't even know there were 6-string pedal steels. Someday I'll graduate to a pedal steel, and a 6-stringer seems more do-able than an 8 or 10 string. |

Sorry, I deleted the post while I was looking to be sure it was a neck and not bridge pickup...anyway, no...no tele twang really...just a clear crisp powerful tone. It was not thin sounding like the bridge pickup in a tele.
I'm still kicking myself for letting this Cougar 6 get away. It had it's limitations, but had 4 pedals and 4 knees and was a joy to tote and play.
Freeman Cowgar built the Cougar but has since passed on. I still sorta in the market for another one. Fun little guit. |

Here is my Teleratt that I just got back from my guitar tech.......the neck pup died and so it was replaced with a Seymour Duncan Tele Neck Hot Rails.....I don't know the maker of the original pup as there's no identifying marker, just a number......

You ever want to sell that Teleratt you let me know Howard
Those were 1990's Bill Lawrence Tele pickups. I don't want to take credit for that model, it was Paul Franklins idea we talked about at a Nashville NAMM show and he had me build it.
Video of Paul Franklin using one; I think he's in the neck position but a little sound bit with 24.5 scale

30 years ago I bought a Gibson EH-150 that had a Tele pickup in place of the original Charlie Christian. Sounded ok but I eventually replaced it. _________________ Steel Guitar Books! Website: www.volkmediabooks.com |

Yes, you are right. I was thinking of the bridge pickup.
I've owned several Teles and never liked the stock neck pickup! My current Tele has a P90 in the neck.
I hope the neck pickup works for you. |
