Hello Forum,
This is my first post to the site, and I am looking forward to being an active member. First order of business is actually getting my hands on a 3X4 pedal steel though! I am a professional guitarist and a guitar instructor by trade. I owned a Carter Starter about 15 years ago and foolishly sold it when I graduated college because I was getting alot of gigs for guitar and wasn't dedicating enough time to practicing steel. Needless to say I regret that decision
Anyhow, from this forum I have learned that Doug Earnest and his Stage One/Encore are great starter steels. Via his website, he is opening new orders in a few weeks and I really hope to get one. But I A)have no idea how long the wait will be B) am very eager to start practicing now C) have read on this thread to explore used steels as well.
I am not interested in a steel that doesn't have four knee levers. I am well versed in music theory and want to dive head-first back into learning, and would hate to have a steel with less levers only to need to upgrade in a year or two. I would like E9 with Emmons set-up
My apologies for the long-winded message, i am just eager to start playing and from all my research this forum is the place to be. Thank you for your time

Ron is underselling so I'll finish this for him. He makes great guitars. Astounding guitars when you consider what he charges for them. Add to that he's just a good guy. If for some reason it ain't right, he'll make it right. |

I bought a Justice S-10(then called a“Jr”) a few years ago to experiment with some setup ideas I had. It exceeded my expectations. Great value for the cost. _________________ KEVIN MAUL: Airline, Beard, Clinesmith, Donner, Evans, Excel, Fender, Fluger, GFI, Gibson, Hilton, Ibanez, Justice, K+K, Live Strings, MOYO, National, Oahu, Peterson, Quilter, Rickenbacher, Sho~Bud, Supro, TC, Ultimate, VHT, Williams, X-otic, Yamaha, ZKing. |

My advice, is to either buy new, or from a long time pedal steel shop. You don't want to waste time with setups, tweaks, driving back and forth to the shop etc. Spend your time building performance expertise, not repair expertise. And check with each maker on wait times. Some may only be 6 weeks. I waited a lot longer than that, but it was worth it. |
