My E raise on LKR stopped working last night. The culprit was fairly easy to identify:
I'm wondering how to go about replacing it -- there are not many people who work on pedal steels in my neck of the woods.
Is it a precision part that needs to be recreated perfectly, or just a piece of bent metal rod? And what's it called? |

the rod is a 1/8" or .125 stainless rod. Welding rod works real well... you can probably also use 3mm rod.
On the reversing linkage it is a straight rod. not usually bent.

I guess the bend in the middle of the rod shouldn't have been there and ultimately led to it failing. But it also looks as though the ends were intentionally bent around to fit into the thing that holds them (whatever that's called). Is that not normal either? |

No it should not be bent. The barrel should have a set screw in the end to lock the rod in place. The rod should go straight threw the barrel and then once adjusted to your liking (knee lever position) tighten it and you should be good to go

| No, there should have been no intentional bends in the middle of that rod. Anyone with skills in mechanics can fix it with a new piece of rod and a hex key (allen wrench). Search out a nearby car enthusiast, they deal with this stuff all the time. |

The pivot bar that is mounted to the back apron in the guitar, Changes the direction of travel. It changes pull from the knee lever, To actually push on the bell crank on the cross rod, That in turn pulls the rods going to the changer.
That rod must be straight, Since it is pushing not pulling, From pressure applied by the knee lever.
The bends where the rod goes into the brass barrels of the bell cranks was secondary damage, Done at the same time the rod bent and broke in the middle. |
