I acquired this all pull Marlen built in 1983 a couple of days ago. Boy what a mess!! Not in part mechanical of it, but just cigarette tar covered piece and it looks someone used motor oil to keep it lubricated for its entire life.
All the workings were sticky. It should be a good when I'm done though.
I have a 1979 pull release Marlen that's a pretty good piece, so whem this one came up on a deal, I snagged it up.

I dunno, looks about the same as any other older well used changer I have ever seen, especially since its probably been on the guitar untouched for 40+ years.I have seen a lot worse.. btw, not a single thing wrong with motor oil for lubricating a steel guitar.. That "dry lube " thing is more or less the past 20 years or so.. The 45 or so years before that guys used motor oil, ATF or even grease, and the good players sounded great and played in tune just like today.. I guarantee, Mr Stadtler used some type of oil when that guitar was built, and its still with us... bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

The underside of my (long-term player) guitar was kinda like the underside of my car. I cared far more about how it worked than how it looked.

Well with all of the mechanism sticking from the grease and oil getting hard with age, you can consider this it's first oil change in 41 years 😉 |

You have a nice clean guitar to start setup on, Great cleaning job.
That motor oil must have done its job. That old white lithium grease they used as lube back in the 1970's, On some guitars turned to a near tan paint with age.
March, 2023 I had to tear down the changers on a MSA Classic, Mr. Anderson said was built in 1973.
I joked I gave the guitar it's 50 year bath. I had to scrape some of the tan crud off with a knife and 0000 steel wool it to get to bare clean metal. On some of the changer R&L levers.
The guitar set up and tuned easy, Once it got its bath. |
