Here is a mildly customized Gibson BR-9; the third variation (1954 - 1959) with a matte, crinkle-coat, ivory-painted body. Purchased as stripped-out husk with fretboard, nut, & bridge. Has a slight twist in headstock (not uncommon with this model) that does not affect its playability whatsoever. It has a custom control plate in lieu of the cumbersome Gibson molded bridge/pickup cover (fingerrest). New Gotoh strip tuners. New Sentell P-90-style pickup with tortoise top bobbin measures 7.28K. New pots, tone cap, jack, & jackplate. Scarce prewar Gibson 481 knobs. Fully shielded and quiet as a church mouse. Wired like a '50s Les Paul Junior:
22.5" scale. Weighs 4 lbs, 14 oz. No case. Currently set up, strung, and tuned to Bb6 (a whole-step below standard C6 -- Bb-D-F-G-Bb-D -- .018-.022p-.026w-.030-.034-.042).

Jack,
Has this guitar been refinished already? It's done with a variegated 50s-looking paint, but seems surprisingly free of dings. Nice guitar.

Hi John,
I'm about 99% certain that's the factory finish. If not, whoever did the refin did an excellent job replicating the silkscreened peghead logo. The body is indeed in great shape. Highly reminiscent of the textured beige trunk paint in my dad's first new car -- a '64 4-Door Biscayne with a straight-6 (and a Powerglide so mom could drive it). |

Thanks, Mike. I like to rest the heel of my picking hand on the strings at the bridge. Coming from a pedal steel background, that's how I was taught to block. Consequently, the stock fingerrests on my BR-9s get replaced by a plate. |
