After all that talk about Film Noir last week, here's my arrangement of a classic Noir movie theme - Laura by David Raskin. Here's my Dobro recording of the arrangement from a number of years ago - not all that well played but you get the idea. I deviated a little from the arrangement as well.

This is a tune I always love singing. Very challenging melodically. I just imagine myself as Chet Baker and it works. Sung it many times and it’s always been a source of intrigue.
Laura is the face in the misty lights
Footsteps that you hear down the hall
The love that floats on a summer night
That you can never quite recall.
That intervallic leap there is so fun. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

One of the great, atmospheric film themes for sure. I've loved it for years. Unusual structure too. The melody occurs throughout the film, but is never heard in full. _________________ Steel Guitar Books! Website: www.volkmediabooks.com |

One of my favourite pieces of film themes. Extremely haunting melody and beautiful resolutions throughout. _________________ Show Pro D10 - amber (8+6), MSA D10 Legend XL Signature - redburst (9+6), Sho-Bud Pro 111 Custom (8+6), Emmons black Push-Pull D10 (8+5), Zum D10 (8x8), Hudson pedal resonator. several years ago, i made a lap steel for a fellow and i used HIS tuning and made a demo of the guitar. the song Laura came to mind and i worked it out. on this demo, you first hear the tuning of the guitar and then the song. its a really nice standard, but you best know the tune, cause its not an easy one! click on "download" if you are inclined. its media fire so its a safe download.

i enjoyed your dobro version. you picked quite an ambitious tune!
i counted the strings and that was a 12 string guitar. had a real low note on it! |

Mind blown again! I love both versions for different reasons. I am getting very excited for my new resonator guitar, I plan on playing it non-pedal for a while. Thanks to both of you for the inspiration.
I really love these changes from major to minor!! I recently worked out a little excersize for myself using this concept. These are very good changes to learn because the tonal center immediately shifts and you are being pulled into different keys. It really opens up the fretboard. |
