...how much would its weight be reduced by converting a '73 Emmons D-10 fatback into a loafer (SD-10)?

Not enough to justify bastardizing a nice vintage instrument.

IMO only.

I’d guess 8 or 9 pounds.

i figure 8 or 9 pounds is about right. i think if you save all the parts and don't drill any holes in it, there isn't much of a downside. i've been considering getting a push pull that needs an overhaul and converting it.

Keep the back neck and put alloy legs on it if you must cut pounds

Jack my '76 D10 P/P (9 & 7) got real heavy after health issues. I bought a '71 P/P S10 and the weight difference isn't worth reworking a classic. I'm not much of a C6th player, but it's more comforting having a backup neck if you break a string on the E9th. I did that once before going 'on air' during a live TV show.

If carrying it out is a concern, split cases are a big help.

I'm with Mike on this.
I would never consider doing that to my '74 fatback...no matter how heavy it is.
Personally, I'd just look around for a Loafer, or a S10.
JMHO....

Thanks to everyone for your opinions and answers. For the record:

1) Yes, I have a '73 D-10 fatback that I purchased from Clem Schmitz in Mpls circa 1977.

2) No, I have absolutely no intention of removing its C6 components.

3) I was merely curious what the savings in weight would be; 8 - 9 lbs. seems insignificant.

4) I would agree that most modifications, and especially the stripping a vintage instrument of its components, is a borderline crime against humanity.

I’m with Mike also. Do not destroy a nice D-10 for a few lbs. Too much of it going on already. Probably not in my lifetime but if people keep doing it, nice old D-10’s are going to be hard to find, especially Emmons push pulls.
If you don’t play C 6th, trade or buy you a single 10 or just put aluminum legs on it. About same weight difference as removing C neck.

A split case was life changing. Now , as to who is making them these days.

Bruce, I got my split cases from Kevin Hatton.
I've had split cases for well over 10 years. As I got older, they feel heavier too. I went through some serious health issues and between radiation and medication, I just can't do what I used to do. I bought an S10 P/P but it's in a single original Emmons S10 case and it doesn't have wheels on it. Sometimes we just have to recognize our new limits.

I'm thinkin that each pedal train is about 2#, then the changer is about 3#, neck 2, keyhead w tuners 1- about the weight of the pad so more like 15# is my guess.

The bag for a Martin backpacker travel guitar fits pedal rack and legs perfectly. The Gator 49 keyboard rigid padded keyboard bag works great for the D-10 body. You just can't stack stuff on it.

Are you playing the C neck enough to carry the extra weight?
