Great article about a landmark recording that included the great Herb Steiner. It was a big influence on my life as a young boy from New Jersey, drawing me to college in Texas. In fact, my older daughter migrated to Texas Tech and lives now in Austin, and I just dropped my youngest daughter in Lubbock for school.

We had a pretty cool Viva Terlingua 50th Anniversary Weekend in Luckenbach this past weekend. It was directed by Django Walker, Jerry's son and a great performer in his own career, who assembled some of the original players on VT and members of Jerry's later road band to be the backup band this weekend.
The whole event was really an homage to JJW by his pals, so we backed up MMMurphey (Backslider's Wine), Ray Wiley Hubbard (Redneck Mother), Robert Earl Keen, Jack Ingram, Dennis Quaid (!), Todd Snyder, all trailbossed by Django. Each night we played the complete VT album, and a plethora of other tunes associated with Jerry Jeff. Friday night's concert was in the dance hall and Saturday on the outdoor stage.
Lot's of folks I haven't seen in decades, and some that were present in 1973 when we recorded the album originally, showed up and reconnected. And of course, the town was completely swamped with attendance. So it was way cool.

| That album was a great favorite in our group of friends when it came out and for years afterwards. Most of the guys were a little older than me. They used the record for background music at parties. Mostly they were drinking beer and picking up girls, I was the oddball kid actually listening to the music! Thank you Herb. |
