Just got my Williams 12 string with the D13 tuning I traded with Doc Brown .

So far here are my first impressions:

ARRGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

I'm completely lost, incredibly frustrated and ready to throw the steel out the window.

Smile

But as Samuel Beckett wrote: You must go on. I can't go on. I'll go on.

Hopefully things will make more sense by the end of the day. The Williams sounds great.

Can post a picture? Of the Williams, not of you tossing it out the window.
Hang on and forget the pedals at first. It’ll make sense eventually.

Takes a bit for the muscle memory to kick in, and the same for adjusting to string spacing or a pedal or lever changes as you probably know.
A nice looking guitar!

Yeah, I know. And I have already found some great changes. Mapping out the changes when there are so many combinations of pedals and knee levers is non trivial as we used to say in the tech industry.

It'll come! I've only been playing a few years now but I'm happily in D13 land. It was a combination of Buddy's E13 post and Johnny's worth honing on on the D13 changes that convinced me that it was for me.

Did about a year of 10 str E9 then moved to a modified 10 str D13, no low root and no string 2. A year after that jumped on a 12str. I found adding extra low string messed me up more than when I added the middle 6th to my 10 string tuning. Took me a week or two before I wasn't thinking about the extra string. Point is, It took me a few weeks from a closer tuning and (probably) less years muscle memory. If you are starting to get it after a day or two you are doing great!

Here you go Jim. Lee I hear you. If I could figure out the Alkire tuning, I guess I can figure out this one. This is like 20 alkire tunings stacked on top of each other. My usual goto when learning a new tuning is Crazy. Af1ter much study of my spreadsheets I realized I could play the 1 6(7) 2m 5(7) opening all on the same fret and that was kind of cool.

As a guitar player one thing I find helpful with learning new tunings, is to find any E related voicings at the open / 12th position...
For example with C6, I found it helpful to 'ground' myself, at first, on the C-B lever that creates an Em7 voicing.

With D6, ( D13 etc ) you have that P5 giving you a good old E9 voicing that surely is helpful...
All the G major stuff in D6/D13 seems very intuitive also.
Good luck-I'm sure it'll take shape soon.

It is starting to come. I had to reorient myself and really start looking at this as more of it's own thing. Found a nice little 1 6(7) 2m 5(7) progression using pedals 8 and 4 that sounded nice. hmm...Tomorrow is another day.

Play with the 1st 7 strings at first. That will allow you to acclimate to having the 6th note in the middle.

I'll play with that tomorrow Johnny. Maybe we can set up a lesson for next year's Dallas show.

I found myself completely thrown a few weeks ago when I had a few minutes to sit behind Frank Parish' 12 string ext E9 Mullen.

It was a noisy bar and there were distractions but, surely, E9 should have been intuitive for me? But no, those two extra strings threw my 10-string grips out of whack. It was hardly a comprehensive study - more of a close look at his guitar - but I know that, when my D13 arrives, I need to be ready for some seat time!

Your black Williams looks fabulous, Bill. Good advice from JC; keep us informed, please.

Very nice, Bill. I especially like the little and ring finger "flutter" on your bar hand :0).
